why would UT @ LSU be anything different than the last game, primetime?

Depends on if CBS wants to use that for their prime time game or LSU-Bama or if there is another good SEC game that week and they pass

2:30pm is the peak time for college football consumption.

CBS gets one doubleheader a year to have a 2:30 game and a primetime game. They used it on ND-UGA this year because they had another good game for the 2:30 slot (Florida-Auburn iirc). But next year for the Texas-LSU game I don’t think there’s any other SEC games worth a shite in week 2, so CBS would have to burn their doubleheader with a shitty game in 2:30 slot to get UT-LSU in primetime. I can see CBS going back to saving the doubleheader for week of LSU-Bama next year

If ABC gets the new SEC contract they could buy out CBS' inventory of games through 2023. Then I believe they may televise the Texas at night for their Saturday Night Game.

If CBS retains the package then the Texas game very well could be at 2:30 based on these games on Sept. 12:

Georgia State at Alabama
Arkansas at Notre Dame
Auburn vs. North Carolina (Atlanta)
Kentucky at Florida
East Tennessee State at Georgia
Texas at LSU
Southeast Missouri State at Ole Miss
Mississippi State at North Carolina State
Vanderbilt at Missouri
East Carolina at South Carolina
Tennessee at Oklahoma
North Texas at Texas A&M

Because they have all the eyeballs at 2:30. No other SEC games are shown during that time slot. If ESPN chooses to show the “big” game at night, they may choose to run all other SEC games at 11 and 2:30 to maximize eyeballs on the prime time slot. That’s why I don’t think people are going to like this as much as they think.

Exactly careful what you wish for.

If the big matchup is moved to 7:00 pm, then the network won't want other big games competing for ratings. so now the top SEC game will get the 6-7 pm slot and the 2nd and 3rd games will get 11 and 2:30 instead so just as many 230 starts if not more.

Also remember ESPN already shows most games, so you will be competeing with even more games for the primetime slot at night.

I foresee alot more butthurt coming than because muh nightgames

CBS isn't getting out until 2023, so they will still have the choice for that game next season.

No one is going to buy out anything, hell the deal likely won't be done for another few years, the SEC would be beyond stupid to lock in 3-4 years ahead when it can have a bidding war.

I actually prefer the afternoon slot... it sucks waiting all day for a big game... plus stressful night games make 8 am church service hard to make

The article said that CBS could be bought out and that CBS and ABC both made bids so there is your bidding war. Maybe you should have read the link first before commenting.

Saturday night has traditionally been a grave yard, worst ratings of the week. Outside of LSU and a couple of other schools, most college games were played during the day.

Probably for the same reason there's never anything to watch on Friday nights as well. Most viewers have 2 off nights a week with no work the next day, and that's when people tend to go out, whether it's to dinner, visit friends/family, shopping, drinking, fornicating, etc. The bottom line is that the number of TV sets turned on during the primetime slots on Friday and Saturday is much lower than the other 5 nights.

They probably get better ratings with CSI. College football is insanely popular in the south. It's a niche sport everywhere else.
I think it is fair to say the SEC has better ratings than most. But it is silly to ignore the huge ratings for major programs in other parts of the country

I honestly don’t care about the start times. Just shorten the games from 4.5 damn hours!!!!

2:30-7 is ridiculous.
