Exactly my thoughts...the timing is probably key. The Honey Badger nickname was given to Mathieu after he started playing at LSU.

I agree. I think the 2 examples mentioned are the honey badger t shirts and the Johnny Football example both of which happened while they were enrolled. In my mind I think that these things are happening now is due to the fact that the family is getting great legal advice. That's my hope at least. But like I said before, I'm no attorney or expert on what the NCAA view is (who is).

It's a smart business move by big name HS athletes.
As soon as BUGA INC. comes out with some jersey's... they'll see $$$$ from LSU students.

Someone needs to tell them PayPal is free to sign up and will generate them a lot more business

You can file this under the terribly awful idea category.
Maybe LF doesn't want to play college ball?

Name another NCAA player that either sells apparel or has a family member that sells apparel in their likeness?
Only way this might be ok is if LF is not yet considered an NCAA athlete (which I don't think he is until he signs the LOI)
Eta: his family is using a po box and a phone # to sell their product. There's a decent chance the LSU compliance dept just found out about this today.

If Birmingham orders up $180k worth of merch, might LF feel the love and commit to $aban?
Posted on 1/31/14 at 6:35 pm to pensacola
The better question is...could REC figure out a way to allow LF to sell his merchandise? I think so.
Posted on 1/31/14 at 6:43 pm to TheOcean
They definitely can. Again, LF hasn't signed anything yet. He isn't violating any NCAA rules

wut? Show you that buganation is in his likeness? I think that's pretty clear and isn't even debatable that buganation is based off of LF's likeness + marketability.
As far as which rule that is, I don't feel like looking it up, but a NCAA player cannot profit off of their likeness and/or marketability:

Are student athletes not allowed to be business owners?
I would think as long as he isnt using any football images or anything he would be ok even if he made money.
