Seem to remember someone in the documentary saying they thought he'd still be our coach now if he hadn't died. It really makes me want to get a young coach and keep him for a long time.

Bo Rein was a devotee of the Veer offense.

The veer could have worked during the early 80s, but the adoption of pro-style offenses in the late 80s made it more or less obsolete.

He was 33 I believe when he took the job at LSU. He was still the youngest head football coach in college football.

He wanted Pete Carroll to follow him to LSU and be his DC....crazy thought

Not with Alan Risher as the QB, it wouldn't. Stovall tried it.

And he was the heir apparent after Ensminger/Woodley.

Interesting. So Rein would have had to adapt to a new offense almost from the beginning. I wonder what that would have looked like.

One of two things would've happened.

Like Stovall, he'd have had to junk the Veer.

Or he'd have had to find personnel who could run it effectively.

As I said in my OP...nobody will ever know.

Fast-forwarding a bit -- I've always wondered how Bill Arnsparger managed to take over a 4-7 team and go 8-2-1 (regular season) in his first year. I know we picked up Hilliard and Martin in '84, but that doesn't really seem like enough for such a dramatic turnaround.

Arnsparger -- now HE was the Saban of the 80s.

Arnsparger was a beast. Particularly on the defensive side of the ball. But Stovall left him with a lot of talent.

They were Stovall recruits. Martin was a senior and Hilliard/James were juniors when Arnsparger got there. Jeff Wickersham was a junior.

Jerry Stovall doesn't get nearly enough credit for the job he did here. The man bled P&G.

Another of the what could have beens the coaching search was between Rein and Bobby Bowden. Bowden said no and signed a new deal with FSU.

To me the quote that says it all was by Woody Hayes saying "Out of all his assistants he thought Rein would have the most success."

Rein was 34

Some of Hayes Assistants
Holtz
Schembechler
Arnsparger
Parsaghian
Dick LeBeau

I think the Bo Rein tragedy is a very sad chapter in LSU lore.

I was in 8th grade when he died. It would've been very interesting to see how his tenure went. I remember at the time he was viewed as what we would call today a "home run hire".

ETA: here is a link to the program...it is only about 25 minutes long:

Thanks for that link man. I've only been an LSU fan the past 12 years (actually they were the reason why I started to watch college football in the first place). I've heard of his name, and that he died before ever coaching here and people talking about how he could have been a legend, but this is the first time I've ever seen the actual story on this.

After watching that and seeing the coaches he was mentored by, the peers that he mentored with, and who he mentored, I believe he could have been the greatest coach in LSU history and one of the greatest coaches in CFB history.

This brings me to this year. With guys like Chad Morris and Scott Frost, LSU shouldn't have to settle one more year for a meathead like Ed 0. With young guys like Fleck, Brohm, Taggart, etc, on the market last year, we settled for a 55 year old DL coach. A old man with a horrible HC record and no true prowess on either side of the ball.

Yep you have to remember he was one of the youngest if not the youngest head coach in the nation. He could have been still coaching today. The man had a hell of a coaching tree. No telling where LSU would be today if he had coached. So said he was good and was bound for greatness.
RIP Bo
That's why I made my forum name so all y'all would see his name when I post.
It's a sad story. Remember the old saying
The good die young

This is the price of having a bean counter as AD instead of a football first AD. JA, this one’s on you.
