BK mentality coaching for players?

When asked about if Arkansas felt like a trap game, BK says "It becomes a trap game if you’re not thinking right, and we’ll get our guys thinking the right way, and we’ll prepare the right way.”

Anybody have any info if the players actually have some sort of mentality coaching on "win and clear"? Or is it maybe just how the feel of practices go to indirectly teach those kids the right mentality and come out strong this saturday?

I like our chances with Perkins shadowing their QB. They will have to throw the ball to win IMO…

I was wondering who the vocal leaders are on our team. I believe that's who the staff relies on to keep the team focused. I do think BK has been changing the mentality of this team since he got here and this weeks game will be a big test in seeing where this team is.

This may sound crazy considering what he looked like in first part of the season but it seams like Boutee is becoming a big time leader.

Based on the post-game videos, Ali Gaye is probably one. He was standing right next to Kelly and felt empowered enough to speak up during Kelly’s speech.

Apart from like the whole process thing which is based entirely about habit-building and accomplishing individual tasks instead of being bogged down by wins and losses, there was some article in the off-season about a few psychologists who came with BK from ND. safe to say he is into that stuff about building the right mindset on a week to week basis.

any ND fan will be quick to tell you BK's biggest strength after that 4-8 year was their ability to beat literally every team they had more talent than. This Saturday is a big test but I do think in the future we won't succumb to as many trap games as in the past.

One thing I noticed -- apart from the disciplined approach -- was how calm LSU looked on both sides of the ball.

If you make the play on them, good for you-- next play.

Even Bama looked flustered and frustrated at times -- LSU remained calm the entire game.

IDK, but whatever it is is clearly working. These players in post-game interviews sound completely different than under O. O was pure emotion. CBK seems to operate with controlled emotion, if that makes sense.

He has said that they do have some mental coaching done throughout the year.

BK has been working with Amber Selking ever since he had the 4-8 season at Notre Dame. She transformed the mindset of the Notre Dame players and Kelly swears by her.

He brought her here during the month of June and began the process of training the Tigers on mental preparation and toughness.

quote:

Amber Selking, who led the offseason classes, wanted LSU’s players to understand how their thoughts affected performance. Brian Kelly believes they need to train their minds the same way they train their bodies

quote:

Everything she did aimed at teaching them how the brain works, the way thoughts affect outcomes and the tools to create a mindset that helps them achieve their best on a daily basis. It’s an ongoing process designed to create consistent routines. Much like weight training, multiple sessions are required to make new habits.

quote:

“The brain is similar to a muscle,” Kelly said. “You have to train it as well. Mental performance is the weight room for the brain for us. That's an important piece in our total preparation.”

quote:

One of the tactics was to replace negative thoughts whenever they arose with positive ones.

quote:

Jones had never experienced anything like the training during his career. He went through a mental performance lesson every Thursday before games when he played for three years at Clemson, but the players there learned what to think about before games. Not much more.

“It wasn't that deep,” Jones said.

Throughout his career, Jones has dealt with anxiety before kickoff. After the conversations with Selking, he learned why that happens. He now has a notebook full of tactics to calm his nerves. He plans to look at them often during the season. They help him in his everyday life and on game day.

“For me, as a fifth-year guy, a veteran, you feel like you've got it all,” Jones said. “But it was eye opening for me to see this might be the reason I feel this way this certain day before this game. Thinking this way might help me do this better. That aspect of the mental preparation has changed my life, has changed my career. I've been able to apply it to myself daily.

“We were talking one day, and one of the things that was said is, 'When you get nervous, it's your body telling you that you're prepared to execute your job,’” Jones continued. “That locked in for me.”

Selking will return in the fall. Moving forward, the players have to consistently apply what they learned so they establish the lessons as habits, slowly reshaping what they believe.

I remember reading that article and thinking about how funny it was that there was such a strong narrative that no one wanted to follow BK to LSU from ND. You can always find good assistant coaches, its the support staff and people behind the scenes like Selking and Dr. Matt Frakes who make the difference and he was able to bring those people over.

not to make this about shitting on ND, but they already look like the classic LSU team that plays to the talent level of their opponent.

I’m pretty sure Kelly has a mental coach on staff. Correct me if I’m wrong. I remember him talking about it in a press conference how he has someone on staff that gets the guys in shape mentally to handle pressure, expectations, etc.

This is one of the benefits of having a modern, legitimate big time college football head coach. Fans don't get to see this kind of behind the scenes stuff but it's very important.

The Arkansas game is always tricky. We've seen some really weird games in this rivalry. It seems like Arkansas is way down the list in terms of rivals. I know just as a fan I don't get it up for Arky like I do with Florida, bama, Auburn, A&M, or even Ole Miss. They are down there with Miss State to me. Just a team LSU has to play every year for some sort of weird trophy. Hopefully BK has them fully aligned and ready to kick some arse.
