He has the physique to be a big-time MLB. We need that kind of presence at MLB this year.

Nah, we got Welter
Yep, Welter is a beast.

Yeah, let's take a 210 kid, juice him up to 240, so he can never get to the QB on a blitz, never fill a gap, never shed a block, trail a slot receiver by 5 yards in coverage 25 yards down the field.
Our DL is equivalent to the second deep of our rotation in previous seasons, and they have to play the whole game. Our LBers play like safeties, waiting for the action to come to them. Our safeties don't play period. Once opposing ball carriers reach second run support, we must rely on the out of bounds. Loston over pursues regularly, along with Barrow.
Angles are bad and most of the time their poor tackling skills never come into play because they're not even in a position to touch the ball carrier. Mills is a liability w/o safety help and teams are now isolating him ad nauseum.
Our defensive staff has done a poor job and ever time I go back and re watch our games this season to identify who's playing chess and who's playing checkers, LSU is the team holding the crayons.
There has been very little done to improve this team's future chances of victory in closely battled contests. They know now what they're getting from the current personnel, know that it is not SEC caliber, and are taking the path of least resistance.
I really wouldn't be surprised to find out Chief is hanging it up after this season. Just looks like that the way things have played out.

I'm talking their actual height/ weights from the combine/ pre draft, not the inflated stuff LSU gave out.

And back on to the original subject here, Beckwith.
You're never going to convince me that based on the staff's use of Beckwith this year that he and his family aren't having regrets.
IMO, he steps into Moseley's spot next season at Bama. How many of our current LBers outside of Debo can beat him in a foot race?
And along those lines, we won't have any returning depth at secondary positions, because no one beyond the 6 deep is considered as good in coverage as Welter and Barrow. They continuously are used in obvious passing downs on slot receivers.

Kwon. However, point taken.

Beckwith and Jones aren't LSU size? What about Kelvin Sheppard and Minter? Both were in the 240 range plus. Sheppard was probably close to 250. Remember we are talking about playing in the middle not outside. Beckwith has to be better than Welter. Even if he is close he has more upside. Maybe our defensive ends are so bad that Beckwith was needed to back up there.

I agree with Kwon, but excluded him in my mind, because he's already on the field, and has proven he has play making abilities.
Your point taken as well.

He played an arse ton at LB in the 3A quarterfinals against Notre Dame last year.

We need to groom some LB's, and quickly.

this season is done, start beckwith there now and let him take his lumps and gain the experience. Welter does nothing at all for you, getting Beckwith ready to man that position next year is more important. Welter isn't a legitimate D1 talent, plain and simple. Move on

Chavis didn't get where he's at not recognizing what every wannabe high school coach in the state has known after 3 games this season.
There HAS to be more to it. I keep telling myself that, anyway.
If that move wasn't made earlier, they're too prideful to make it now and have it make them look bad, even if it improves our play. I've really run out of answers.
I was even told that his academic ineligibility last year was not due to grades, but that LSU made an error in his class scheduling or requirements. Some sort of snafu that has maybe resulted in the loyalty we are seeing.
People are getting desperate to explain it. Lol

I'm done trying to figure it out too. There is no legitimate excuse for continually trotting the guy out there. None
Posted on 11/11/13 at 1:27 pm to BilJ
If Rodgers takes all the reps in Green Bay, then Welter deserves all the reps here. The guy is a future HOFer.

I've generally trusted Chavis' personnel moves without much question, with a couple glaring exceptions.
1) Hatcher to Mike and not Sam (which is where he was initially going). that gradually got worked out after a few games (though Hatch would still pop up in place of Minter after Minter began starting)
2) Welter starting. he could've moved Barrow over or moved Louis up the depth chart (unless Beckwith had been here in spring, I didn't see him starting). boggles the mind.

The kid has been a DE all his life, he's NEVER played LB before.
So, essentially, LSU still will not have a MLB next year. Nice

I welcome this and hope he can talk Miles into retirement with him. Who knew 205 pound LBs and 240 pound DEs would not be able to fill holes or shed blockers

What you yelling at me for, bro??
Beckwith should have been the staring Mike.
It pains me to see LSU's toughest player on defense be handcuffed to just special teams play and a handful of defensive snaps, especially when LSU allows 180 yards per game on the ground.
