About now, you will be hearing about how wonderful the system is because, unlike the NFL, the regular season matters in college football. But what this season is really doing is exposing that BCS talking point as the Big Lie.

If the regular season matters, then LSU — if it wins out — can make a case that there shouldn’t even be a BCS title game this season.

I agree with this. Ironically, I think it really calls into question the arguments for having a playoff instead of the BCS. Luck is way too big a factor for ONE game on ONE day to be for ALL the marbles. If LSU is undefeated, why should they have to win ANOTHER game?

That's kinda like a playoff, no?

Yes, but a playoff is just a series of those. I want to have as few of those as possible.

So what do you propose? A 3 game series? 5 game series? Football has always had one game on one day for all the marbles. There's this thing in lat Jan. early Feb. that's really "Super." Generally it's one game that decides everything.

The glaring assumption in these scenarios is that voters will keep Bama at #2 in the final poll. I don't believe there are that many voters who want to see a LSU/Bama rematch. If OSU beats OU I think just enough anti rematch voters from the Western states will put OSU ahead of Bama. It's all up to OSU.

I personally don't think the coaches put much thought into their ballots until the last one.

In reality, it's probably an unsolvable problem due to how fractured the sport is - over 100 teams in lots of different conferences. To the extent that we must have a solution, I think the BCS is far superior to both the old method of playing bowl tie-ins and all the currently proposed playoff systems.

I think the NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl are an incredibly lousy way to crown a champion, although not as bad as March Madness. (note: all these comments are made from the perspective of actually crowning the best team and NOT from an entertainment standpoint).

The ideal model in all of sports is English soccer - 20 teams playing in a completely closed system. You play a home and away round robin with every single team (i.e. closest it's possible to come to every team having the exact same schedule). 0 points for a loss. 1 point for a tie. 3 points for a win. At the end of the season, you add up the points and the winner is the team with the most points. There's no artificial "ok, now the top 2 teams have to play each other" bullshite.

Again, this is impossible to replicate in a sport like football, but it IS the ideal. It's the least amount of luck possible.

It certainly calls in to question the argument for a plus 1. We would have to beat OK St. or Arkansas first just to play Bama in the final....even more cocktarded.

The problem is that either way you have a fixed format while the circumstances of the season will dictate that something different is called for. For example this year the best solution would be to take the best challengers into a 4 team playoff where the winner gets to take on LSU in the BCSCG. The previous 2 years the BCS worked fine. In 2007, they should have had a massive playoff. The question is how can you work this flexibility into the system?
