The way he has hit this offseason, or rather hasnt, i dont blame them for not talking him up. He has a nice frame and mlb projectability, guess his pitch recognition is just poor

Willis is definitely a bit of a mystery. He looks the part; and wasn't he tearing it up in the northwoods league (or wherever) this past summer before getting hurt? Did the injury set him back that much?

Hughes at .313 is either super encouraging or going to be a huge let-down.

The important thing to know here is what is behind the numbers. Russian and Scuba may disagree with me here (and if there is anyone else that went to scrimmages routinely); but he appeared to be way more comfortable and confident at the plate. Where we used to just see him swing wildly at stuff or be easily fooled, he was actually working counts and putting confident swings on the ball. Of his 5 hits, the majority were well hit balls too, not just luck shots or bloopers.

Additionally, I noticed at least a handful of times where he put the ball in play to move runners over or even bring them in. He also bunted a couple of times that I saw, and looked pretty good doing it. Had good technique and placed the ball well.

If he can give that kind of production at the bottom of the lineup, then he and the team will be just fine.

He hit .333 in the fall

if that were true then great. perhaps that's what he hit in our scrimmages against bad teams?

according to Scuba, he hit .258 in all of Fall, and that's not going to cut it

What are you talking about?!

Any fan that follows LSU baseball and knows what they are talking about would take a .258 batting avg. all day long from Hughes; especially if he is giving you an OBP over .300 with some walks. Last season, he hit .174; so a .258 is nearly 75 points better.

Hughes is by far the best option this team has at short from a defensive standpoint. So if he can give you those numbers at the plate, then he is overall a net positive production player for you. I would venture to guess that just about no SEC team has a 9 hole hitter even sniffing a .300 batting avg.

So our season opener starting lineup is batting 0.295 in Spring Scrimmages. That avg is brought down pretty significantly by Dugas. If he would’ve gotten only 2 more hits during scrimmages, his avg onlyimproves to 0.190, but the team jumps 0.306. I hope he does well. He’s from my area and several of my friends watched him grow up.

Hughes...a solid 313...sounds like 3 or 4th in the batting order....Hal cumming.

in a related story, the mother of Hal Hughes is the official spring scrimmage score keeper
