There was discussion on this topic last night, and I'm late to the party, but here's my thoughts.
About 7-8 years ago, teams in college baseball were able to add an extra weekend series or two. They are still held to the same number of total games, but with the extra weekend games, it means that the midweeks are less active. In the past, it was common to play midweek games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Playing 5 games in a week really worked your pitching staff, so the freshman and back end staff players go much more work. It allowed for the young pitchers to develope, but it also cost a few games here and there. It was also true that several years ago, many of the midweek opponents for LSU would throw their weekend guys for several innings to have a chance at the win. This created at least one, possibly two pitching mismatches each week for LSU during midweek games. LSU could afford to let a few guys learn from failure in some of those games, because at the end of the year if we are highly ranked, we could just buy the regional host away from anybody with similar or slightly better records. That's not possible anymore as the NCAA doesn't really allow for a regional to be bought anymore.
The way the schedule is now, LSU really only has to have 4 starters. With only one midweek game for most weeks, your top of the line relievers are going to get work in the midweek game as well. The pitching matchups are no longer in favor of the opponents, because LSU has a fully rested bullpen ready to take over after the 5th inning. Also, the midweek opponents really don't start their weekend guys much anymore.
Basically, I'm just trying to say that the emphasis on winning midweek games is more important now, and with only one game each week, it's easier for LSU to win those games than 15 years ago.

Some good points. Back when Skip was coaching, you had 2 midweek games nearly every week.

About 4-5 years ago, I would argue that our hitting was suffering because of the one less midweek game per week. Hitting is rhythmic, and hitters need to see constant action to stay in a groove. I gave up on that arugment because I know that more weekend games means more money in the athletic departments pockets, so our current scheduling philosophy isn't going to change.

HUGE getting Arkansas and MSU at home. We should be able to take 2/3 from Flordia away. Probably only win 1 vs Vandy. 2 if we get good hitting.

You see Chicken's pitch sequence help thread on the OT? If only we had the EPIC thread still, he could have asked there and gotten the best advice on the planet.
