I think the point that having Pete Jenkins not recruiting and is retiring means an additional on the field coach will begin recruiting is a huge aspect here. Austin has family ties to Tennessee and his role may have had to change. But, it’s Alleva’s fault because our fan base doesn’t understand the full scope of the ADs role.

LSU will be just fine without him. He's great at what he does but he can be replaced.

why do you refuse to understand that what LSU pays him is not his total compensation? it has been enumerated TIME AND TIME AGAIN that TAF pays him more than LSU and he is very well compensated.

Thomas is a native of Frankin, Tn; an extremely high quality of life place to live and raise a family. I used to live there and both of my children chose to remain when I got transferred (over 18). it indeed is a special place. in fact, the man could possibly take a pay cut to go back. sure, he'll be in Knoxville but could probably do a lot of his job in Franklin and actually reside there. at his pay he could afford an apartment in Knoxville. I don't know that he would do this but he could. even then, Knoxville is only about 2 hours away from Franklin.

the man is not a football coach and his value to LSU has diminished since Pete retired. he is no longer allowed to recruit and in reality would probably not recruit for UT either after they get fully staffed.

hey, I understand he's great at what he does but he is not indispensable as some of you think he is.

I was constipated yesterday. I suppose that too was Alleva's fault. our damn fan base doesn't understand a lot of things and part of them don't understand diddly squat.

I live in Franklin and you're spot on.

Our fan base is full of idiots. Every last thing is Alleva's fault, because that's what they think they're supposed to say.

If he is gone over money, that's inexcusable.

Regardless, that's a big hit if he leaves.

Hey Rickdaddy! I bet you have.

haven't seen your posts for awhile and was beginning to think you were ill or something. maybe went abroad for an extended period or was a target of an assassination attempt.

glad to see you are alive and kicking.

What are you talking about his job has diminished?

He basically runs the entire LSU football operation next to Coach O. He’s always served in an overflow recruiter capacity as well . When Coach O was closing K’Lavon in TX, Austin was closing Phillips in OK. Coach O, Lane and Austin are close because they took Austin under their wing at both TN and USC & now at LSU. This has nothing to do with the cost of living or being in Franklin, TN.

The next logical career move for Austin would be a Director of Player Personnel and/or College Scouting at the NFL level. He’s turned down numerous NFL scouting and quality control positions. IMO he shouldn’t settle for anything less.

the fact that he can no longer go out and recruit literally means he has less job duties. less means diminished. when one's job responsibilities are increased they usually get more money and vice versa.

with the hire of a recruiting DL coach, thomas' role will be an inside one. I hope the man stays, I really do; I just don't think he's indispensable. he recruited great last year but that part of his job is over.

ok, but if he's NOT GETTING A PROMOTION he can do his job in Tennessee. I was merely commenting that, all other things equal (which they may not be), I could see him wanting to be in Franklin near family, etc, etc.

the man is not a football coach and no longer a recruiter. his job is administrative. that's as clear as I can put it except to say I HOPE HE STAYS. but will not think the sky is falling if he goes home.

no longer able to recruit off campus

Not "always". Only since Orgeron hired Jenkins when he got the interim job last September. They obtained a waiver from the NCAA for Austin to recruit for Jenkins. They structured Jenkins deal so he was a transient employee (basically month to month) and this allowed them to get the waiver for Austin to recruit in his place. Once Jenkins officially retires, Orgeron will replace him with a full-time position coach, thus eliminating the need for Thomas' waiver.

Those days, as cool as they were, were effectively over anyway. And you meant TN for Phillips, not OK. He was committed to Oklahoma, but he's from Nashville.

You know for a fact this move would be about money? Do you know the extent of Austin's ties to Tennessee?

I know the extent of what he is getting paid here and it isn’t shite compared to the rest of the staff. I also know his value to this team and he is underpaid compared to what he brings to the table.
