This ranking hurts us though. One loss and it will be damn near impossible to catch any one loss teams already ranked in the top 5.

I think they will too, and I hope they get demolished just like Hawaii did against UGA so all that talk of "those" schools goes away.

It's too late for that. Utah and Boise State have won BCS bowl games over Alabama and Oklahoma. They've won enough games on the big stage against the big boys that one big loss isn't going to make them go away.

The coaches poll is 19. Which is the only poll that really counts.

16, we are 16. The ESPN poll is truly as useful as I conduct out of my basement. AP is at least influential though technically worthless.

Agree this is a preseason poll and means nada. The only polls that count are the the last two.

So why let them get a 3rd crack at USCw? I think USCw vs OU was the right game.

WRONG!!! AT least AU would have showed up.

We all know what will happen if, no, WHEN, LSU destroys UNC. The media will credit our victory to the horrible UNC offense and our superior talent, that this was a game we were supposed to win.

I love how all the other teams with second-year starting QB's get an automatic upgrade from the media, whereas JJ still has all these question marks. Like these other QB's should be better this year and provide much better leadership, but somehow JJ is incapable of improving after his first full year under center. In spite of questionable offensive calls (to put it mildly) and sub-par O-line protection, he finished the year with pretty good numbers: 61.5 completion percentage and a 137.18 passer rating. Not too shabby.

they only have 2 real games, Nebraska and OU...They'll get their 11th year in a row of 10 wins

It was mentioned on a local sports program two days ago, that ya'lls favorite person from ESPN, Kirk H., predicted that Alabama and Auburn will both be undefeated when they meet in the Iron Bowl, with the winner going to Atlanta.

This post is meant to reply to this thread in general, not specifically to the OP:

Playoff system - yes! We do need it. Where a team is ranked pre-season does in fact matter. Very much. Undefeated Auburn being snubbed by media/college football - yep, it matters where they started/how they were perceived before/during/after the season, etc. ----

Confirmation bias:

LINK

This is long. That's OK. Bookmark it for later reading. Very informative. Confirmation bias clearly defines why early season rankings are huge for a system like NCAA FBS w/BCS MNC participants in the hands of polls & PC software (i.e., BCS final poll).

BTW, we benefitted from serendipity & confirmation bias in '07 with our 2 losses. We (LSU) took advantage of the opportunity & emerged on top (sorry, Ohio State - ha ha). Ohio State seems to always be ranked pre-season in the top 5, but that's another story.

LSU #21

That's to be expected when LSU performed so poorly offensively last season along with all the coaching blunders....I really think our goofy arse ( 2009, “Best Offensive Line Ever") head coach understands that the heat is on, and will not screw with the offense as much this season...I'm looking for a good year.
