Williams grew up in Hempstead, Texas, where he was touted as one of the country's top high school running back prospects in 1986. Williams was considered a lock to commit to nearby Texas A&M, but shocked everyone when he committed to LSU at the last minute on signing day.[citation needed]

The highly contested recruiting battle created a lot of bitterness between the two schools (LSU and Texas A&M had recently revived their yearly football rivalry).[citation needed] Because of it, Williams went to LSU in 1986.

I’ve heard Harvey tell the story. He was hearing gigem and TAMU all the time at school that he got sick of it. He got up that day and sent his papers to LSU. He never mentioned that story I can remember. Move to a different back. I’d look to Port Arthur, Beaumont, Lamarque, Galveston Ball or some other school.

Jake Crain said he worked for the coach and the coach was telling him the story. Crain only coached college ball for like three years at South Alabama 2009-2011 and 2013-2015. I can’t find any coach at USA that also coached at LSU before that.

I don’t believe this story at all. It’s a great story but it’s a fish tale.

It’s Harvey Williams. To hear him tell the story is well worth the listen.
