Regardless of why he "chose" LSU, the story about Alvin Roy is really cool, thanks for posting! I had no idea how influential he was, or what an impact he had on college and professional athletics. Thanks for posting the link!

I think all stories are bull shite. I was around but the only thing I heard about was a dust up in Baton Rouge when he was at Istrouma.

Nothing to do with Cannon going to LSU, but Alvin Roy had two of the most beautiful daughters - Astrid and Gina - went to Lee High with them

Billy Cannon ran a 9.7 100-yard dash?! Wow, compares well with this list.
Billy ran the 100 consistantly at 9.5 and was clocked at 9.4 one time. He ran the 40 in 4.12.

Cannon was going to LSU. Did he visit other schools? Sure, notably Arkie, Ole Miss and Bama but LSU was in his heart and never was going anywhere else. He made the right call I would say.
One thing Cannon did that many people don't talk about was he was the first player that emphasized weight training. He was 220 pounds in 1957
which was bigger than the lineman.

I heard Boots Garland say the only guys he's seen with Billy cannon's combination of speed and size were Bo and Herschel. But Billy played in an era when everybody was smaller.

...that would be the 478th version I've heard since '57. I'm sure it's accurate though!

On a slightly related topic, I was watching a very good documentary on the AFL yesterday (on YouTube). I didn't realize how important Cannon was in getting the AFL off the ground. He was the first big-name star athlete to go to the AFL and helped the Oilers (QB'd by George Blanda) win the first two AFL Championships (MVP in both games). Who knows, without Cannon we may never have had the Jets, the Raiders, Chiefs, Dolphins, etc.
