with NIL and the transfer portal this is a whole different animal.

One of the many questions I have is how much NIL support he is getting. He recruited top "OVC level" talent to Murray State. Theoretically, the same approach, whatever his approach is, should translate to recruiting "SEC level" talent to LSU. The Gordan McKernan's of the world are giving NIL deals to our female athletes. I certainly have no issue with that, but I don't recall hearing NIL and MBB uttered in the same sentence by someone like McKernan. There is a reason Wade was paying players out of his own pocket.

For some reason, our administration never has, and I suppose never will give MBB the support it needs. It's maddening.

in our last discussion I felt his hire was a mistake because his previous experience did not provide me any optimism that he could recruit at this level.

Perhaps. But then, in a very short window of time, he signed Ward (top 30 recruit); Reed (top 70); and Phillips (top 110ish). That's not a "bad" class even for someone who had a year or more to recruit. On paper, that was much better than Wade's first signing class after getting the LSU job.

Additionally, I was not confident he could coach against SEC competition consistently.

That's always an unknown when you hire a mid-major coach with no major conf. coaching experience. Nate Oats came from Buffalo to Alabama. The argument could have been made that he just piggy-backed off of Bobby Hurley's success at Buffalo and that a guy who was literally coaching HS basketball 6 years earlier couldn't coach against SEC competition. He quickly put that to rest. McMahon arguably had as good, maybe a better mid-major resume.

I think even CWW struggled here

Hard to say Wade struggled. His first LSU team was picked to finish last in the SEC. With not that great of a roster besides Waters (Epps and Reath were ok and Mays was starting to develop a bit) he won 8 games in the SEC and also beat national runner-up Michigan and a Houston team that finished the year ranked No. 21. The next season he led LSU to its best SEC performance in nearly 40 years. That doesn't happen by just "rolling the ball out" and getting out the way. Talent matters a lot...but so does coaching.

EVERYTHING about this season has been disappointing. From the non-conference scheduling, to the horrible results in SEC play, to the recruiting outlook. Made worse by the fact things definitely didn't look that bad going into the season. LSU didn't formally get a "death penalty" from the NCAA. But they may as well have because this season's results are nearly the equivalent of such.

Maybe this was a situation akin to a regional race-car champion suddenly being put on the track in the Daytona 500 and being totally overwhelmed by the speed and skill of competition. Now that he has experienced it he has a better idea of how to compete and a plan to do so....at least we hope that is the case

It's hard to recruit to a school when you don't know if the NCAA is going to hand down sanctions.

But that doesn't matter to the Wade Sycophants. Only cheating and winning whatever the cost

The Dale camp

Are we talking about the guy gone from LSU for over a quarter of a century and 90. He has a camp? Are you talking about 3-4 retired guys who meet for breakfast once a week and talk about the good old days? lol

To compete in men's basketball we're gonna need to be doing way bigger than Gordon level NIL deals.

It's why the athletic department leaning into the General Wade stuff last year knowing that firing him was on the table was so fricking stupid. There's no way there aren't boosters that are pissed off by that and have backed off supporting McMahon.
