Belichick install a 2-5 front vs Buffalo in the Superbowl in '91. The intention was to eliminate Jim Kelly, Don Bebe, Andre Reed, etc on big plays. It allowed Thurman Thomas to rack up 200+ yards, but it took away the long ball that Buffalo beat opponents with.
As far as stopping the spread, I would think speed across every defensive position. OU did decent last year containing UF. LSU held UF to 24 the year before. It's an effective offensive system, hence the widespread popularity.

What are the defensive keys to defending the spread?
Interior push from the DT's.
Sounds funny but watch games where it is stopped.
Ends only need to rush 2-3 yards into the backfield to keep containment.
DT's must push up the field pressuring the QB in his face and not letting him run through a broekn pocket.
Thing about the spread is, you always know where the ball is going for the first 3 seconds of a play... in the hands of someone directly behind the center.
And, a pressured QB is an erratic QB.
So, DT's that can mount a serious straight up the middle rush are the #1 key.

Speed on defense, well coached defense, but lot's of offense is the real key. Keep their offense off the field. My opinion regarding the spread is that we need to get use to the idea of seeing higher scoring games, period. Spread vs spread is the key. You do your best to defend the spread but in the end the highly skilled spread offenses are going to outscore you if you don't fight fire with fire.

Ask the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I recall Muschamp talking about the '07 game. He mentioned how few tackles they missed. Sounds like they basically got people in position and made the plays.
Whatever it is, don't try what we did last year against UF. Too much read and react.
Bama did ok in the '08 SECCG against UF (sans Harvin) but they were trashed by Utah.
TCU seems to have figures it out. Don't they play a 4-2-5?

A 4-2-5 is NOT the way to go. It's the exact wrong thing to do against the spread option.
