basing an offense around getting sacked won't work

I think if we actually ran an offense instead of jumping in and out of multiple packages.

I agree that you need to have packages put together, but Gun one play, under center next, pistol, no back, one back, I... No one can get in a rhythm.

Two opposite qbs. One doesn't take chances one does. It sucks. Maybe Zack will show em how to do it. If not I would give the ball to lee. Jefferson would be an every five plays guy to throw defenses off

Everyone who bashes JJ really should be bashing the coaches for not running a scheme around JJ.
To me, this is so obvious, its painful. It goes back to JL. If you can't coach your QB, or your back-up QB, up to your scheme, at some point you have to remake the scheme around the QB.

JJ is a weak pocket passer. So when the game is on the line, you call a drop-back in the pocket pass?

Got to focus on what the guy can do and then throw in some other stuff as he gets confidence, not vice versa.

JJ is perfect for a run first offense that does not rely heavily on QB play

Problem with this is that he doesn't seem like he likes to get hit. Every time this year he took a big hit the offense just folded up afterwards.

He definitely doesn't run the option well. Whether its him or the pitchman, the spacing is always all wrong and the pitch never seems to be made with the right timing.

While I'd agree with JJ's inability to run the option, i have to admit, I don't think there's any QB that goes YES! Thank God those linebackers are going to rip my head off!

Best offense for JJ, fwiw, would be a pro style offense centered around PA bootlegs. Personally, if we had something a la Mike Shanahan inspired, he could probably do well in that.

I'd also like to see, at least once, Shephard throw a pass this year.

The Shepherd pass is a mystical thing like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Sure, some people have claimed to see it, but they are all kooks.

He hasn't displayed the armstrength to have a vertical passing game, so if you are gonna pass the ball, they would need to run the west coast style with a lot of dinks and dump off passes.

I'd have to disagree, he's got the arm strength. I watched him, in the spring game, nicely overshoot some receivers lol. And saw him put a decent pass to Shephard down the sideline as well.

If we're talking about touch, however, I don't think he has the consistency in that department. Neither QB does. Dinks and dunks were last year, and we saw how well that worked.

We as fans want to believe things will get better, but I have a real bad feeling we're just fricked at the QB position for this year. Again.

That's why I'm crossing my fingers for a great GREAT running game.

My question is how can we tailor an offense to fit his style of play and take advantage of his athletic abilities?

Tailor the offense to the players on the field? No, no my friend. Crowton doesn't do that. Jarret Lee in the game? Spread, crossing passes and pistol options. Jefferson in the game? Spread, crossing passes and shortside options.

Seriously, in my opinion a better offensive scheme could have made both these quarterbacks look a lot better out there.

I think he should just play ball and quite worrying what people on the rant is going to say about him for throwing an Int. He plays scared.

The one Brian Kelly uses where the QB only has to make one read.

You said it just right. Crowton's scheme whatever that is. Crowton appears to reach in the play book and run stuff. There is not reasoning to it, no actual strategy, no play calling to set up future play calling, nothing that really throws a defense off. It's just run random plays with no real plan. That is why "to me" he really must go. If he score consistently with this talent he flat out sucks. There are any number of OC's that would dream of coaching this talent. And I think there is even an OC out there that could take at least one of these QB's and develop them into a real player.

Destrahan's

Ya talkin bout Destrehan High School, Junior High or Middle School there?

I mean really, let JJ start the season and go through the UNC, Vandy, State and WV games. If there hasn't been any improvement, if he's still doing the same things he did last season and the offense is struggling to score points, it'll finally be time to cut bait and move on. Put up or shut up. Step up or step out and away. And, during those first four games, Miles/Crowton better give JL a lot of snaps with the first team so he just doesn't stagnate there on the bench like last year. You don't get better and improve by sitting on the freaking bench. He'll need the reps, just in case JJ tanks it. I'd get Garrett in there some as well......

he is a contrarian. he thinks he's fooling someone.

I would rather see them line up and knock someone down.

Example. Ball first and 10 on the Ole Miss 31, and he calls a pass play when a run for a yard or three, and the field goal wins the game.

Misdirection, roll out ....get JJ out of the pocket with a chance to run of option number one isn't open.

Do something to play to his strengths, you are not going to make him a pocket QB.
