A Review of 21st Century LSU Quarterback Success

I believe there are unrealistic expectations for Nussmeier. Most successful quarterbacks in the 21st century at LSU have needed at least a second full season as starters to really turn it on.
While we should expect more from Nussmeier, expecting him to single-handedly overcome all of this team's deficiencies is asking too much. What QB at LSU has ever come in as a first-year starter and been an immediate star? Look at the stats below. Our greatest QBs had very pedestrian stats and success as a first year starter. Nussmeier's relatively hot start statistically, compared to other LSU quarterbacks, suggests he has the potential to be special but put it into perspective.
Passing only
Name:
First Year Starting at LSU Stats
Second year Starting at LSU Stats etc.
Comp%, yards, TD, W-L as starter
Matt Mauck
48.5%, 782 yards, 9 TD, 2 int, 5-1 (injured)
64%, 2825 Yards, 28 TD, 15 int, 13-1 (NATTY)
Jamarcus Russell
60.5%, 2443 yards, 15 TD, 9 int, 10-2
67.8%, 3129 yards, 28 TD, 8 int, 11-2
Matt Flynn (only one year as full time starter)
56.3% 2407 yards, 21 TD, 11 int, 12-2 (NATTY)
Jordan Jefferson
49.3% 419 yards, 4 TD, 1 int, 1-1
61.5% 2166 yards, 17 TD, 7 int, 8-4
56.5% 1411 yards, 7 TD, 10 int, 11-2
61%, 737 yards, 6 TD, 2 int, 4-1 (played for natty)
Jarrett Lee
53.2%, 1873 yards, 14 TD, 16 int, 4-4
62.3%, 1306 yards, 14 TD, 3 int, 9-0 (should have played in natty
)
Zach Mettenberger
58.8%, 2609 yards, 12 TD, 7 int, 10-3
64.9%, 3082 yards, 22 TD, 8 int, 9-3
Danny Etling
49.5%, 2123 yards, 11 TD, 5 int, 7-3
60%, 2463 yards, 16 TD, 2 int, 9-4
Joe Burrow
57.8%, 2894 yards, 16 TD, 5 int, 10-3
76.3%, 5671 yards, 60 TD, 6 int, 15-0 (NATTY & HEISMAN & STILL F*CKING INSANE)
Jayden Daniels
68.6%, 2913 yards, 17 TD, 3 int, 10-4
72.2% 3812 yards, 40 TD, 4 int, 10-2 (HEISMAN)
Garrett Nussmeier

Now if I can only convince my groupchat the same

The Nuss Buss isn’t even close to being a problem on this team.

No, but he’s not good enough to make this particular team a championship one. He may could win one with Georgia’s team or Ohio State’s. He’s been really good, especially for a 1st year starter. But to OP’s point, if he comes back next year, you should see a significant jump in his play. Hell, I think he’ll be much better by the end of the season.
The only thing that worries me is our WR room next year. Lacy’s gone, Daniels is probably gone (I think he might could get 1 more if he wanted it, but might want to get his his pro career started), and I don’t think Sampson is very good and doubt he’ll even be back. We’ll figure it out and have a good group, Nuss just won’t have much chemistry with any of them except Anderson and maybe Hilton. Won’t have much in-game chemistry with Thomas it appears as for whatever reason, we refuse to get him more involved in the offense.
Also, this is not a great QB class. So Nuss might actually wind up leaving when I think under other circumstances, he’d probably love to come back. But we’ll see—things change.

On pace for 3600 yards, 40 TD’s and 8 ints with a 69% comp.
Good season. Pretty much on par with expectations for him this year.
Now if he makes a similar jump in performance in his second year as starter as some previous good QB’s LSU has had, next year could be really special with a more talented receiving corps.

This is another great point!
In the last year of the most success, our QBs had top notch wide receivers that were drafted in the NFL. In fact, everyone except Flynn & Etling had at LEAST one WR that went in the first round but he also had Derrius Guice and LF7. I don't see a first round WR on this team or a true game changing RB (maybe Caden will be him)
Mauck had Michael Clayton and Devery Henderson
Jamarcus had Bowe, Buster and Doucet
Flynn had Lafell, Byrd and Doucet
Jefferson/Lee had Rueben, & OBJ
Mettenberger had OBJ and Juice
Burrow had Chase, JJetas & Marshall
Daniels had BTJ and Nabers
