I think that we were inches away from a whole different ball game. When JJ narrowly missed OBJ in the seam we had a chance. OBJ catches that it's probably six. That's the one play that had a chance for LSU.

Talking to a gump colleage, he felt kind of deflated after the game. Winning a hard fought battle is much more satifying that if the other team rolls over. He was glad they won, but not elated.

you do not leave ammo in your weapon in a firefight. you go down shooting. we clearly did not do that. i can see why you agree with keeping JJ in.

Biggest misconception about Les. He is not a "gambler." He's ultra conservative but will go on 4th, fake a punt, fake a field goal, etc. only when he absolutely thinks he must do so to win the game. Some of that would have been nice...then we would have known he was trying.

Miles gets more right than wrong and he probably more committed to the community, the school and the players than any coach in the SEC.

While many Tiger fans are still in shock and imagining some conspiracy theory as to why we played so poorly I think the answer can be summed up in McCarron's post-game comment saying that their scout team completely had them prepared for the LSU game plan, meaning, Saban had the Tigers figured out (which he did on Nov 5th as well - kicker just didn't execute). I believe that Miles' hubris is his arrogance from being SEC champion, 13-0, #1 in country and AP coach of the year. The predominant game plan this year was to wear down the opposition and creat short fields with turnovers. When neither of these things occurred Monday night Miles did not alter course. The OP congratulates Miles for coaching with his gut feelings but in this case Miles needed to have the guts of the "gambler" everybody thinks he is and radically change the offensive game plan even if it made him look bad. Congrats to Bama - one of the best, if not THE best, defensive performances I've seen. Still proud that our D kept us in the game so long.

I don't have the heart to watch the game again. Did JJ get hit as he threw that ball? It was a bit of a duck I think.

OBJ was really frustrated that they missed that throw. He knew it was 6.

Thanks for the kind words.

Personally, I think LSU should have stayed more with the Nov 5 game plan.

LSU should have pounded the ball up the middle and especially the wider gaps between the DE/Jack LB. Play action off that from times. Keep that up until the 2nd half then start with the speed stuff around the end and option play.

Would have been alot of 3 and outs but I would have pounded the D-line and LB and wear them down, like the first game. Then go speed and pass. In addition, a slower game would have limited Bama possessions and given our defense a bit more rest.

This speed game (ala Oregon) we came out with was crap and NOT our game. We abandon our power game and certainly did not commit.

Our defense played well enough for this type of power game. Hell, the defense kept the game manageable even with Bama's change in offensive strategy.

Anyway, it happened and on to the next season.

Wait...the OP walks with a limp?

FWIW the OP has very valid points and it is nice to hear a RATIONAL view from the outside.

Good post and thanks for the good sportsmanship. I think the great majority of LSU and Bama fans are decent people and good sports but God knows you'd never reach that conclusion from the Rant.

I too disagree with your opinion about JJ. There is a real difference between gambling on a trick play in situational football and futilely keeping in a player and a game plan built around him when it is not working. A Hail Mary pass is not a "gamble" when you're down by 5 at the 50 yardline with one second left in the game--it's prudent game management at that point. So it was on Monday--2 1/2 quarters of Jefferson required a change in the game plan and qb. There's no gamble there; not to do that was negligence.

Looking forward to November!

Let me clarify...I do not think Miles made the right decision to not put Lee it or even go for broke with RS in the wildcat. I just meant that Miles goes with HIS gut decision and, in his tenure, he is right more often than wrong.

Bravo!

LSU will return next year, probably with a chip on their shoulder. Wanting to make amends for the way the season ended. At least, that would be my mindset.

Props to Bama, they had a great team there is no doubting that, they won we lost and that is all you can say.

One of the strangest games I have ever watched. It was hard to enjoy it from the Bama POV until Richardson scored. You kept expecting for LSU to have that turnaround play and get the momentum as they have done so many times.

I really think that game was only one play away from being a different game (At least until halfway through the 4th.) LSU got off to slow starts (Relatively slow starts as they still were dominant in most circumstances) in other games this season only to have a single lynchpin play get the ball rolling. It was a similar feeling to when the Saints used to play the 49er’s and you just knew that Young or Montana were going to figure out a way to break our hearts.

As for the criticism of Miles for sticking with his gut feeling and keeping Jefferson in the game, I cannot disagree with Les. When Les won his BCS championship, he went with his gut feeling several times with high-risk moves and play calls and it worked a lot more often than it didn’t. You cannot enjoy having a gambler as head coach without the expectation that the gambler will sometimes bust.

I was one of those folks who had a feeling that Miles was living off Saban. I was completely wrong. Les has an inimitable style all his own and has had an incredible tenure as HC at LSU. While he lost the last game, 2011 may have been one of the finest seasons of football any NCAA team has ever played. Miles gets more right than wrong and he probably more committed to the community, the school and the players than any coach in the SEC.

"When Les won his BCS championship, he went with his gut feeling several times with high-risk moves and play calls"

---that's the part that drove me the most crazy during the game. I kept expecting THAT Les to do at least one of his patented risky calls, but no.
