For those of you who missed Mainieri's post game comments. He mentioned that Arnold is batting, catching and throwing and that he was two or three weeks away from playing. The reason Mainieri brought him up is because he felt that he could contribute when he comes back.

I watched him a little bit in the fall and he does seem to have good range and has batting potential. At the time I thought he would challenge Hughes for SS and win the job.

The problem is he is coming back from injury and the preseason will be about over when he does come back. This doesn't give him a lot of time to adjust. I would be a little surprised if he can contribute but based on Mainieri's comments today, there seems to be a chance.

Well unless Cranford starts hitting, he won't have a very high bar to reach to produce at the same level. (I like what Cranford has done so far btw).

Yeah it sounded like mainieri hopes he takes the job when he is back. And if his bat struggles it isnt a big deal because hughes and cranford arent hitting either. Maybe he can figure out the bat by late in the season

I’m hoping we move Mathis to SS until Arnold gets healthy.

PM definitely sounded like he wants Arnold in the competition for SS.

Until Arnold is available I think that the best defensive left side is:
3rd Base - Mathis plus defensive player.

SS - Cranford - at least an average defensive player - at least more consistent than Hughes at this time.

The other options
Mathis at SS - probably not a plus but average.

3rd Base - Drew or Cade but both are average to minus players defensively at 3rd base imo.

I'm with you here. Leave Mathis at 3B and hope that one of the new kids can play D and hit .200 at SS. The bar is low.

Pretty much, put whoever gives you something with the bat, whether its just putting the ball in play or who can battle at the plate a little. Having the whole left side of the infield not play good d, is a recipe for disaster

Cranford has looked good in the field so far. I’d rather Mathis stay at 3rd too.

Let Cranford, Hughes, Arnold battle for SS.

I also like Mathis leading off with Cabrera in 3 hole. Milazzo has been biggest surprise to me of young season. He’s been barreling up some balls of late.

My boy Labas was cruising today. Love how he pitches.

Agreed with mathis at 1. I like the top 5 of our lineup, we just got to find one or two more guys near the bottom to be average hitters

Yep. 2 weak bats you might can work around.

4? Disaster.

Totally agree.

I think that today's lineup is the best defensive lineup and definitely like 1-5 in the batting order.

Leave Mathis at 3rd.

Let Cranford/Arnold/Hughes fight for SS. Cranford leads at this point.

Let Dugas and Doughty battle it out at 2nd.

I would leave Hampton in CF.

RF - Cabrera
CF - Hampton
LF - rotate Bianco; Toups unk until it is settled.
1st - Beloso
2nd - Open - Dugas; Doughty ??
SS - Cranford; Arnold; Hughes
3rd - Mathis
C - Millazo backup Garza
DH - primary Garza; backup Travinsky and Doughty.

Hampton gets up to speed for baseball and then he’s gone for more than month for spring football just as the SEC part of the baseball schedule gets going.
