A player goes to school and plays football and contributes for 3+ years, missing some of his agreed upon 4 years to injury. Now, it is for to the school to tell him: No, 4 years is not enough, you must stay 5 years.

WTF is up with that?

That's why I think it's dumb that they count "redshirt juniors" as leaving early at all, but they do for some reason. As someone else pointed out, Barkevious Mingo was a tiger for 4 years also, but since he redshirted his first year, he's considered an early departure? Doesn't make sense, but that's how they make these lists.

Who said the school should force him to stay? Who said the school should force anybody to stay?

At least you guys have a point with Blue, but this quote:frankly anyone who has been on the team for 4 years, which may or may not include a redshirt year, isn't "leaving early". is incorrect.

This time I can actually say that I agree with you. Montgomery, Mingo, etc. were here for 4 years. They were still early entrants to the draft last year.

Blue is not an early entrant. Yes, he has a year of eligibility left due to the reshirt, however, that does not make him an early entrant. He is a graduating senior.

How are those cases any different from each other?

This isn't the NFL's definition, but practically speaking it's the one that makes more sense... An early entrant to the NFL didn't graduate, and graduates didn't enter early.

So all of the fourth year guys may or may not have entered early depending on whether or not they got a degree.

they were all at LSU 4 years...in reality leaving after 4 years is leaving "on-time", regardless of the term the NFL uses in reference to players who have eligibility left.

You did, and anyone else who says he is "leaving early" after he played his 4 years.

He didn't ask for a 5th year, LSU did that. Why is it then that if he doesn't want a 5th year he is "leaving early"? I don't understand that.

how so?

Yeah, Faulk may never play again, so he probably made a wise decision to get paid. Not even sure he would have played at LSU this year.

How about instead to come up with the theory that Miles does a dang good job of developing players and getting them to the next level. Such a negaTiger. Always find the good, right?

I concede that point, I am not anti-Miles. Look through my post history and you will see that I'm a de facto sunshine pumper.

I merely started this to see how common an occurrence it really is. I think it speaks volumes that we have so many players in the NFL, I just wanted to see the discussion on how often or not often early exits have success in the nfl.

Just wanted to see how many each year and get people's takes on it. I'm actually surprised we didn't have at least two every season with all of the good recruiting classes we put together.

My bad bro, guess I didn't pay enough attention to my subject line. I'm usually better at starting threads for the most part.

So basically, in your opinion, anyone who left early but was not drafted in the first round or buried on the depth chart made a bad or questionable decision?

quote:

2012 Rueben Randle WR questionable decision but if he had the work ethic would be a star in the league

Dude is doing alright for himself. It's only questionable from the standpoint that I believe he could have been a no doubt first rounder after a year with Mettenberger at QB. But he got out the year before the new CBA and rookie pay scale went in to effect. Would have been the wrong decision if he had come back and ended up drafted in the second round anyway.
