Was that the year Dayton or Navy blasted us in the first round?

Navy with "The Admiral", David Robinson. SEC champs played horribly and had no clue how to stop DR.

We all aging ourselves in this one. Those 80's teams were some fun teams to watch. Nikita, Hot Rod, Jose Vargas, hell I will even throw in some Gert Hammick

Oliver brown the defensive specialist.

Hell that's when I used to love watching some LSU college basketball

Great old shite to remember.

Hadn't even heard Gert Hammick's name in forever. That would've been a great addition to the recent thread of the best players' names!

Vernel Singleton's band aid under the eye. I thought he wore it on his shoulder!

A few observation from on other comments in this thread..

John "Hot Rod" Williams played for Tulane and shaved points. We had the more talented John Williams but he ate himself out of the NBA.

Vernel had a band aid on his shoulder. I don't remember one under his eye.

Pretty sure it was that 85 team that lost to Navy and David Robison. But I was in elementary school so not 100% certain on the year. I actually remember trying to watch the game during our library visit. I assume it was played during the day on either Thurs or Friday. I was devasted as a 3rd or 4th grader by that lost. Seriously.

And I thought the UTEP loss was a year or two after the season with Shaq, Stanley, CJ, etc. I was thinking it was when Geert was dominating at Center with TJ pugh at PG. Can't believe my memory is not clear on that though.

I will always remember that as a kid listening to the games on the radio. Oli Brown as a defensive specialist. Then Lineer (sp?) Burns was a defensive specialist a few years later if I'm remembering correctly.

1989 team. 'Black Friday' all 5 SEC teams lost that day in the first round of the NCAA's.

LSU won that game and won the SEC on the process.

Lots of scenarios at tip off time.Game was on NBC as even though they lost the NCAA tourney to CBS in 1982 they kept showing games until '88 or so.LSU had started league play 4-5 including the infamous John Williams pass to no one which enabled Georgia to steal one in the Assembly Center (for a team that we seemingly have no real rivalry with, there were a lot of big/strange LSU-Georgia games in the 1980's).

LSU and Georgia were 12-5 going into that last game. Had Kentucky won and Georgia lost to Tennessee later that night, there'd been a three way tie for first. LSU won and Georgia lost at Tennessee so we were sole champion. The Kentucky win was also Joe B. Hall's last trip to Baton Rouge as UK coach and the LSU win gave Hall a losing mark at Baton Rouge at 6-7.

Well, a year in a half earlier in the fall of 1983 it got Tom Brookshier fired. He and former Lion Wayne Walker were doing the Saints-Eagles game and during a pause CBS popped up a graphic for the Louisville-NC State game that coming Saturday in the Tip-Off Classic. Brookshier said something to the effect,"Denny Crum and his Louisville Cardinals with a collective IQ of 40 take on defending champion NC State." You could tell Walker was stunned and said something like ,"aw, we're just kidding" and Brookshier said,"no,I'm not, but ,man can they play some basketball."

Canned the next day.

1984-1985 was my last year at LSU. I made every home football, basketball, and baseball game. I went to the Sugar and watched Nebraska stomp us. It was the single most fun year of my academic career. P.S. Wouldn't Ricky Blanton have been on that team?

I went to that Sugar Bowl. We were up 13-7 at halftime, I believe. They started running the option and we couldn't stop it. And I think Wickersham threw a couple of interceptions.

I wish I could find the video where Singleton was almost parallel to the floor when he dunked on someone.

I remember those guys. And Howard Carter and Leonard Mitchell too.

As an aside, I used to work in the same building as Rudy Macklin. He seems like a good guy.
