But i also like only one game for the CWS title. Not best 2 out of 3.
That winner take all BS was a CBS mandated thing when they took over televising the CWS title game. Before that, everything was double elimination from the regionals to the championship. I never liked the winner take all for two reasons. First, an undefeated team could lose to one loss team and lose the series. Second, why have double elim the whole time, except for the final game? I like the current format.

I'm an old school guy. I liked the 6 team regionals and the CWS when it was just a regular double elimination tourney.
That said, I prefer the 2 of 3 championship series to a 1 game winner take all format - even thought that format sure worked great for LSU.

6 team regionals turned into endurance tests rather than who had the best baseball team, IMO.
Exactly it was better for LSU, because we had depth.
Top heavy vs heavy loaded pitching- what makes a better baseball team?

I don't know it seems a little like you belittled the NFL playoffs in your reply to my first post.....it also seems like you would like to see a bcs system implented in college basketball and baseball.....Is this a fact???

IMO what he is saying is that playoffs don't crown the best team as the champion.
Like I've said after a 162 game season in baseball what does a 5 game series tell me?

After a 162 game season I would contend that the best teams make the playoffs.....what would you have mlb do at this point?

NL champ vs AL champ- 7 game series

quote:Not the BCS system we have currently. But I would prefer a system that more strongly reflected the results of the entire season instead of being so heavily weighted on just the playoffs. I appreciate the value of some form of playoff, but putting 64 teams in it is just too much, imo. There has never been a 16th seed in the NCAA Basketball Tournament that had any business getting a shot at the National Championship. By the end of the regular season, those teams have conclusively demonstrated that they are not the best team in the country, and thus there is no point in having them involved in a National Championship playoff if you intend the champion to actually be the best team in the country. There can be some uncertainty at the top, but Morehead State, East Tennessee State, Radford and Chattanooga? Even teams like Akron and Northern Iowa; would winning the tournament really have convinced you that either of them were a better team last year than North Carolina, UConn or Louisville?

You would have to cut the league by at least 6-8 teams to do this.....the talent pool is way too diluted to do this right now IMO
Posted on 5/30/09 at 1:29 am to LSU316
quote:They do . . . but so do several other teams. If the Red Sox and the Yankees each play a 162 game season in the same division of the same league, and the Red Sox finish 10 games ahead, the Red Sox are the better team, period. The Yankees winning 3 out of 5 games (or 4 out of 7) is not going to change that.
After a 162 game season I would contend that the best teams make the playoffs
quote:Like they used to do: the best record in the AL is the AL Pennant winner; the best record in the NL is the NL Pennant winner. Those two play in the World Series.
what would you have mlb do at this point?

To be fair, however, I find Major League Baseball utterly and completely useless. So anything that makes for less MLB on tv gets a thumbs up in my book.
But I also do believe the old pre-playoffs system had much more integrity to its championships.

Do you feel the same way about the NFL?
The Giants lost twice to the best team in the NFC (Cowboys) & once to the best team in the AFC (Pats). 9 teams had has good or better record than the Giants. But they were the NFL champs.
Arizona Cardinals last year had the same record or worse as 8 other NFC teams. They were seconds away from being world champs.

I guess it depends on how you look at it.....I am a huge MLB fan more so than the NBA, which we haven't even discussed and might have the most exciting playoff system period even though it seems like most NBA teams make the playofs, and NFL because I love baseball and I also love competition so I love the MLB playoffs just like they are. Many people, like you guys, hate the wildcard but I love it because it means more baseball for me to watch....and I consider the World Series champion the best teams because they made it to the playoffs, in this diluted talent pool situaton, and won it

That summed it up! Playoffs = excitement & $$$$

You saying you are against excitement? It just seems to me that most sports other than college football have gotten it as right as it can be IMO
