The other thread was anchored for some reason so I guess I have to start a new thread. Not going to copy/paste everything so there is still some info in the old thread

LSU is looking to rebound after another disappointing post-season loss in the Red River Conference Championship against Baylor. In that match Baylor played their best game while LSU seemed to already be looking ahead to the playoffs.

Here is the schedule poster for this upcoming season.

With the Baylor game in the rear view mirror, LSU looks to take out it's frustrations on it's conference opponents this year. LSU is currently sitting at 3-1 on the season with solid wins against Clemson, Houston, and LSU-Alexandria. LSU's sole loss on the season came against Lindenwood which is currently ranked #5 in the country.

LSU opened the year with a win against a scrappy LSU-Alexandria 25-10. For those that are curious, LSU-A has actually made rugby a varsity sport and finished #2 in the country in the national small college rugby division. That opening match, LSU struggled with it's set piece after having to replace almost half of it's starting pack from last year's squad. But LSU's rugby skills and experience helped the Tigers pull away.

The next match came against a very talented Clemson team who was expected to make some noise in this year despite playing in the toughest division in the country. After a tough first half, LSU managed to pull away before Clemson scored with time up to make the final 27-22 LSU. This match was solid experience against a quality opponent which will go far in terms of LSU being ready against top tier teams.

The third match of the season did not go near as well for the Tigers. LSU fought tooth and nail against #5 Lindenwood to only a 7-0 halftime score but in the end the Lions depth allowed them to pour on points in the second half with the final being 45-5.

The following week LSU took out some of it's frustrations against an overmatched Houston team. Tigers won a lightly contested game by the final score of 76-12.

Next up for the Tigers is their Fall Semester finale against Arkansas in Baton Rouge. LSU to date has still yet to lose a conference regular season game and hopes to keep it that way against a talented Arkansas team. Arkansas is surging with confidence after a narrow loss to #8 Arkansas St (31-19) and winning the Red River 7's Championship.

The Arkansas match will be at 1:00 at the LSU home fields and will also be streaming live for any interested in trying to catch the match.

Another note. With the collapse of the Varsity Cup Challenge many top tier teams have rejoined D1A Rugby such as Cal, BYU, etc. Last season these teams weren't included in the D1A rankings as they did not compete in any D1A division. What this means for LSU is that it will be that much harder for LSU to move up in the rankings as there are more teams but also that being ranked is that much more significant.

As always.

D1A Playoffs

A little lagniappe.

Going into the 2015-2016 season LSU decided to abandon the SEC (SCRC) and make the jump from D1AA to D1A. Since joining the Red River Conference, LSU has posted a combined record of 25-6 and a perfect 16-0 record in regular season conference games.

Of LSU's six losses, four have come against Top 5 teams (2 vs Arkansas St last year and 1 against Lindenwood and Life this year).

Here is the highlight video compliments of GiftTimeRugby for LSU's 51-15 victory over Arkansas. This one was expected to be a much closer game as Arkansas was the pre-season favorite to win the Red River North Division. Depending on how the season plays out, LSU may have a rematch to look forward to in the Red River Championship.

LSU vs Arkansas Highlights

FloRugby: New Leaders Emerge in Red River
From that article:
quote:

The Tigers thumped a very good Arkansas team 51-15 over the weekend. “We’re a good team,” LSU coach Scott McLean said. “We have some seniors who have been pretty much starters since they were freshmen. We’ve got some experienced guys.”

quote:

Cameron Troxler scored a try and did a solid job opening up the field. Wing Aidan Elias is very quick and scored two tries. Todd Dupre also did well, but this was his last game as he graduates this December.

quote:

“Our defense has been pretty solid all year, and even though our conference is getting tougher, I feel pretty good about where we are right now,” McLean said.

This match concludes LSU's fall schedule. The Tigers finished with a 4-1 record including a 2-0 conference record.

LSU will next be in action against #2 Life University in Atlanta. The Running Eagles will be heavily favored as their squad is the golden standard for collegiate rugby, but LSU will be looking to catch them sleeping and make some noise.

I'll post any relevant articles I see during this mid-season break. Until then..

It's been a quiet offseason for the Tigers and they're finally just getting back into conference play. This Spring season LSU has only had the chance to play one match to date. That was a 103-0 thrashing at the hands of #2 Life. This final score isn't much worse than what was expected facing a team like Life.

The small school out of Atlanta has slaughtered all competitors to date and the only matches they've lost in the past 4 years have been in the national championship. The Running Eagles are one of the best funded varsity rugby programs in the country. Full scholarships for all players, weight rooms, trainers, full time staff of paid coaches, and they have the ability to pull recruits from all across the globe. Unfortunately those are just excuses. A few of Life's other wins have been 63-3 over Clemson, 69-5 over Arkansas St, and in the Fall they knocked off quality programs Penn St and Navy in back to back days.

But, still, once again... just excuses. In reality, LSU was overmatched from the get-go, and everything snowballed after a few key early injuries. Luckily this match doesn't affect LSU's post-season hopes at all and serves as great experience for future challenges.

Next, the Tigers were supposed to play UT in Austin on Feb.3 but that game was postponed due to snow. That game has been rescheduled for 2/24 in Austin.

Finally we get to the present. LSU is gearing up for a tough battle against the one team that poses a threat to capture the Red River South title. Texas A&M will bring a fight to what has traditionally been one of LSU's biggest rivalries. Last year LSU dispatched A&M in both matches 36-26 and 33-10 and A&M will be looking for payback.

Things will be tougher for LSU after losing a 4 year starter and All-conference player at 8-man to graduation, but LSU has added a few big bodies in the forwards to compensate. This team isn't the same long, lean squad that LSU has traditionally put out on the pitch. In the words of Big Red, "We're short so we'll be able to get real low." This should lead to a solid scrum and great ball retention in the rucks.

So come on out and stop by before the baseball game Saturday. The pitch is just a short ways down the road past Alex Box. Kickoff is set for 1:00.

Only a club sport with a better overall record the past 2 years than any varsity sport on campus. But trolling aside this is a huge game for LSU.

Think about it like this. By supporting rugby over varsity sports you're boycotting Alleva in a way. And I think spite for Alleva is something we can all agree on.

Also, I know from 1970 through my years 94-98 with LSU Rugby, the club never had a losing record in the regular seasons.

And this is despite chasing better competition over the years switching conferences from from Deep South to Texas Union in mid 90s, and then on to these Elite College Conferences.

I'll be there as it's perfectly scheduled before the Baseball Game.

This should actually make it easier to catch the game before baseball.

Update to the Update to the update: Game is at One after all.

Found the facebook link
LSU vs A&M

Guess I'll also include some rankings as LSU is solidly underranked so far this season. Mostly due to the lack of games early in the semester and big blowouts against top 5 opponents.

LSU is sitting at 27th according to Flo Rugby and they have Texas A&M sitting at 19th. This should hopefully be flip flopped after this upcoming weekend.

Almost ready to kick off l’ll keep the score updated as necessary. There’s a strong wind blowing from south and kicking and territory will be vital early on.

Looks like the match will be streaming live from the GiftTimeRugby Facebook page.

Another try for the Tigers! Flanker Boston Joe powers over after a great angle a few phases after a scrum. 12-0 Good guys!

A quick answer off of some LSU miscues. 12-5 Tigers. Looks like we have a game here.
