1965 Sugar Bowl - LSU over Syracuse

Cool half hour review of 1965 Sugar Bowl. A little strange in that it shows so much punting. Pat Screen (QB, and later mayor of BR), Joe Labruzzo (sp?) at RB and Doug Moreau at TE. I really no very little about this team but they won the Sugar Bowl.

It was still a defensive game at that time - the Tigers would often punt on 3rd down if there were more than five yards to go.

I was there. Floyd Little played RB for Syracuse, and was supposed to make the difference for them. Played in Tulane Stadium. We went in with two fifths of Crown Royal in plain view.

I was at the game. Charlie Brown was an All-American running back for Syracuse but didn’t do much against LSU.

Syracuse's featured running backs that season were Jim Nance and Floyd Little. I googled their 1964 roster and found they did have a Charlie Brown on the squad as a DB.

I know this was common, but don’t understand what there is to gain by doing it.

It was never a popular decision with the fans, but as you said it was common. As a matter of fact, in the famous Holloween Night game, the Rebels had so much faith in their defense that they punted on first down a couple of times, and I believe the punt Cannon returned 89 years was booted on a second down.

Big George Rice tackled Floyd Little for a safety.
