there werent that many bowl games back then and the ones they had were huge. i loved that film! dietzel, chollie mac, len amadee, jerry stoval, etc; huge men in the history of LSU football. and some of you young people think LSU football was irrelevant before Saban.

the rant would have ripped Amadee for the picks, and ripped dietzel for not winning by 40, and only finishing 7th ranked in the country.

it's sad that this is true. a lot of the fun has been removed from LSU football with the ultra lofty expectations and the perfectionism of some loud mouthed people. also, the "big money" of today's game has bleached much joy from college football. LSU was one special place in the day. (still is but not as much, imo).

Not MY beanie, actually, but I did have to wear one to cover my shaved head - a mandatory rite of initiation for all Freshman males.
God, I miss those days!

This was one of the gifts the coaches got from that game:

Gros was a force of nature. Made it big in the pros as did Stovall and Winston.

The real question here is, would that Colorado team beat this year's group of Buffs?

I love those helmets with the numbers on the side...we should do a "throwback" game like the first game or the homecoming game every year...

Thanks for the link, enjoyed seeing what a big deal the bowls were back then. At least when everydamnbody did not go to a "bowlgame" like now.

Even the so-called minor bowls had top 20 matchups with 2 or 3 loss teams. Mizlou network carried these games. Big boys like ABC, NBC, and CBS televised the big 4. Fiesta was a minor bowl that pitted the winner of the WAC against a major power like Nebraska or Oklahoma.

Some thoughts:

No free substitution in those days. People played both offense and defense.

Our only loss that year was to Rice.

Defense was emphasized and LSU often kicked on third down. Field position was important.

There was not as much passing as shown in that video.

LSU had to have the law changed because they could not play against a team that had a NEGRO on it.

The film was clearer than it was on my 17" black and white TV.

Cholly Mac sure looked young and he became the head coach after that game.

As stated by others, going to a bowl in those days was a very big deal, especially one of the top four.

General Middleton should have gotten credit for being the main reason that we won the Battle of the Bulge.

Sad but true. Today it's hard to believe that kind of nonsense went on back then.
