Several "influential voices in college football" are reportedly prepared to discuss increasing the number of College Football Playoff teams from four to eight.
Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reported Wednesday that CFP expansion has received a "groundswell of support" with hopes the change can happen before the current contract with ESPN, the event's broadcast partner, expires in 2026.
"It's an appropriate thing to begin thinking about," Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told Auerbach.
Although the College Football Playoff has received less criticism than its predecessor, the Bowl Championship Series, it's still created issues. There isn't enough space for a representative from each of the Power Five conferences, and it has left virtually no path to a championship for schools from smaller conferences.
I’ve been telling everyone the 4 team playoff wouldn’t last through the contract.

Seeds 1-4 host in what would be this week Dec. 15. Semifinals and Finals unchanged. Easy solution and still gives two weeks between the conference championship and a quarterfinal.

First round being hosted by teams would be great.
Realistically I see It always being bowls but idk.

4 teams is an absolute joke. When you have 12-1 OU and 12-1 Ohio St. being decided over subjective opinions than something needs to be done. I hate both teams, but Ohio State had just railed #4 Michigan too. LET THEM DECIDE IT ON THE FIELD!!! 8 teams would be perfect imo.

8 team format would be great.
5 auto bids to P5 conference champions
2 at large bids
Auto bid to highest ranked G5 conference winner

6 or 12 is the way to go, with all higher seeds hosting ON CAMPUS until a final neutral site championship game. This still keeps tremendous importance on the reg season: you want to scrap for the bye and or home games. Imagine a 9 seeded LSU traveling to 8 seeded okla st one year, and travelling to Stillwater in december. The winner gets rewarded with a trip to #1 Ohio st. LSU would strive in the reg season to avoid that.

Yep, effectively makes the playoff more of a 13 team playoff as the conference championships would be like a first round play-in game. Of course the loser of the championship game would still have the potential to make it should they remain ranked high enough to get an at-large bid.

I disagree here. Gotta make it 3 at-large bids with an auto bid to a G5 team only if ranked in the top 10. Can't just give the best G5 team an auto bid because in some years that could be a wasted spot.

So we are now FORCING teams from each conference and independents...
and of course some teams like ND exploit the system.
they are in the ACC when it benefits them and out when it does not. This year ND would have had to have played Clemson if they were forced to play by the rules...and likely NOT in the playoffs.
NO LONGER THE BEST TEAMS... shameful politics.
Go back to the BCS, talk the humans out of it.
I remember the AP Polls and Coaches Polls POLITICS
not football

Go to 6 games and let #1 and #2 mean something w a bye.
Right now and in the proposed format there is no benefit for #1 and #2

you may be right, but the computer places a higher degree of difficulty
the reason we went to it was to get rid of POLITICS...but then ALA and LSU were in the finals and rather than just fix the sys, they gave in to Presidents and Athletic Directors.

I really am not a fan of an enlarged playoff. The comissioners just want it to guarantee their conferences the money in the years where their best teams aren't good enough to make it. There really aren't more than 2-3 deserving teams in any one year. Then after this people will just bitch about the 9-10 teams and it'll probably expand to 16. The product gets more and more diluted and over saturated each year.
ETA: No G5 teams deserve to play in the playoff. They don't play the schedule and they only beat uninspired teams who if we're being real don't give a shite about playing them in the past when they have sprung these upsets (OU 2006, Alabama 2008, Auburn 2017). A G5 team will NEVER beat 3 straight top 8 teams to win a championship.

I have no problem with 6 BUT NOT SET BY CONFERENCE FORMULA as to who goes in and who does not.

Just use the division II or FCS model... this isn't that hard

Completely disagree, because you wind up with the same problem of perception bias we have now. Suddenly no team outside the P5 would be ranked higher than 11th. I would say the AAC and MWC champs should get auto bids with one at large bid for a team that slipped through the cracks.
