What is the purpose of the stripe going down the side of the helmet? It makes no sense and it looks awful.

Wondered the same thing.
Did one of the trainers walk-in an hour before warm-ups and throw a roll of tape to the guys and tell tape your helmets like this?

Worse than the uniforms looking like a coked up pimp designed them is the fact that auburn vs Tennessee is a legit historical rivalry between two charter members. Those two teams started playing in 1900 and played 36 straight years and when Arkansas and South Carolina were let in, auburn and Tennessee were permanent rivals before the sec reduced the number of permanent rivals from two to one. Call me an old fart but I grew up watching these teams play what I see now on tv looks like auburn vs a who-is-that

I was today years old before I discovered that gray was a school color at the University of Tennessee…
