16 was the absolute max. Sadly, the the people in charge of the conferences and NCAA have ZERO foresight.

Exactly. If LSU loses another close game by 1 possession and ends up 9-3 , but start getting hot at the end, I guarantee you no one would want to play them in a playoff game. 24 teams gives more good teams a chance. Especially with all the parity now.

With four teams playing for it, one of which was undoubtedly the best team anyway, the other bowl games that weren't part of the playoff still had some appeal. With a twelve team playoff all of that has all been thrown out the door and no one wants to play in a bowl game that isn't tied to the playoffs now because they might hurt their NFL draft stock if they play another game. (Freaking candy-asses.)
Four teams was best. Eight teams should be the max ever considered. But in today's age, it isn't about the game. It's about the anticipated TV revenue.
Remember how the rules were changed in the name of making the games shorter? How'd that work out? Now a 60 second time out on the field translates into a four to six minute TV commercial break. It has never been about the game or the college athletes despite what they may tell us.

More good teams shouldn't have a chance though. What's the point of going undefeated and beating a team once and you just have to play them again in the second round at a neutral site? Or maybe even have to do that with multiple different teams you've already beat? It's dumb and it shouldn't be oh you have the talent to get really hot and win the national championship even though you lost 4 games. There will be an 8-4 team or something that sneaks in and makes a run and beats teams that they had already lost to and it will just show that the regular season really doesnt matter.

I also think 24 teams is too much, but on the flip side, today shows you that top ranked teams can lose to non playoff teams.
