the big issue with him at LB is that we lose out a lot with his ability to cause interceptions
dude plays the ball like a WR and has amazing hands
he's also going to probably be amazing at stopping RZ passing routes like the fade

I think playing him at Nickel would better suit him than linebacker. He can cover, cause disruptions, and stop the run closer to the line of scrimmage.

That's why Saban calls him every Wednesday

What makes you guys say his motor isn't always at 100%?
The HS games I watched, he plays both ways, offense and defense, so he conserves a lot of energy.
When on defense, he only puts an effort into the guy he is covering. When the ball is say, ran to his side, he doesn't attempt run support, but rather lets the LB's and safeties come up to makle the tackle. There was one play where the RB came his way and he was the first line of defense and he literally did not take one step towards the RB who eventually gained 40 yards.
With that said, it's only a by-product of having to conserve energy to be on the field at all times. So it's a non-issue. But that's why some posters come away with that lack-of-motor impression.
But he is easily the best athlete on the field. On defense, he has PP7/Claiborne ball skills/hands. As a WR, he does what he wants: catch over a guy deep or take a short catch and Peter Warrick's them with YAC. He is a playmaker.
I would have liked to see him in HS being physical on defense even just once, but I get the conserving energy part. Once he is full-time on D in college, he has the physical tools (ht/wt/frame/4.55 speed/hands/agility/quickness/great vertical) to be more physical and developed to attack.
His ball skills suggest CB and even WR. His frame suggests LB. His adequate speed suggests safety. Dude is just an athlete who makes big plays. Just get him on the field.

Thanks for the answer. Exactly what I wanted to know

From my high school in the Boro. I'm very happy to have an Oakland patriot in the P&G....

we stopped redshirting anyone other than QBs and OLs
When most of your junior class leaves early, or at least all the best ones, there may be little choice but to burn redshits because you need depth.
Also, Bryan Urlacher came out of Arizona as a safety and wound up as a pretty decent linebacker in the NFL. If Stephens has the frame to carry enough weight, why couldn't he start out at safety while he bulks up to switch later?

How does this pertain to Riley, who only played special teams for 3 years before starting in his senior year?

I think we will see a different philosophy with guys like this. He might actually get plays on offense.
I would like to see our highest skilled guys get to play on both sides of the ball.

I just watched some files about an hour ago. I think this guy could be used like Jabrill Peppers

/I mean, were the 17 special teams snaps (lowballing for effect) Duke Riley got as a freshman more valuable than the potential senior year he could have had next year? I seriously doubt it/
One of the most legit points made on this board ever and it can be said about plenty of players . We miss a big year out of a player for a few snaps. Used to play these guys early in some rent a wins and still redshirt

I assure you that he is an elite athlete.
