He was in Penny's Dog House for most of the year.
He was in the dog house cause he was terrible.

He went to a college with a coach who would be better off coaching AAU ball.
But he kinda fell off before Penny got a hold of him.

I do think Bates let that early attention get to his head a little bit as well
Like someone else said, I think he peaked early. He never grew physically, and his game seems to have devolved. It got so bad that he went from the next Kevin Durant to “maybe we should see if he can be a pg”.

Maybe on shot selection, maybe off court or practice/classes - can't say I remember.
But we have one of his coaches so if he'd be worth it the coach would know.

When they were floundering early in the year, Penny spoke openly about jealousy and dissension with the returning guys toward the freshman. Since Bates was the one that disappeared not long after that I'd guess it was more about him than Duren.

Duren is a fricking beast, by the way.
Eta: Know anything about Camden - the other guy we're supposedly looking at from up there, 22?

No idea, I just paid attention to Bates because it was such a trainwreck.

Edited to shorten the list

Interesting trying to figure out who we can add. Efton Reid sounds like he may go to Virginia tech. Adam miller Missouri. Ezewiro is down to oregon(st?). Uab and Nevada. Tyrell ward gotten some steam to Georgetown.

Yep. You start to try to wonder where the players will come from. All of the guys that LSU seemed to be in on recently have chosen to go elsewhere. Noah Batchelor, Camden, it appears Ward will go to Georgetown. If Reid and Miller ultimately choose to transfer it seems like any slight bit of momentum LSU was maybe building will be lost.
There is still a lot of time. But the recent decisions that haven't gone LSU's way have been disappointing.

The staff is recruiting more than just those 2-3 players.

Of course they are. But the more player that choose other schools, the less GOOD players there are available. If you look at the top 150 or so HS recruits for this year probably 95% have signed or committed for next season. The transfer portal ebbs and flows daily. But the top players are obviously going to get the most attention across the country.
I have no doubt that LSU will be able to sign enough players to field a team. But if you continue to miss on targets eventually the pool of players that could help make you a competitive team starts to dry up.

Yep you are right. Which is why I find it interesting. Someone will pop up out of nowhere. Like fountain.

From a mizzou site
Also they are very confident they get Miller. I got way too excited about the Miller/Reid returning smoke

Yep Mizzou is certain they get Miller and Virginia Tech is certain they are getting Reid

Disagree that we are running out of options. There are countless quality options in the portal and a bunch of good options in the juco ranks still available. We were never gonna load up on big time high school recruits after Wade was fired. It was gonna have to come from the portal and jucos. Getting Miller would have been unbelievable but not getting him doesn’t mean the sky is falling. You can bet that we are talking to dozens of portal options. People seem to think that the ones we know about are the only likely options but that is simply fans being delusional. We simply don’t know crap about what is going on. Sign another 4 solid players with at least one being an alpha/big time type player and we are fine. Also if coach is the X’s and O’s guy people are implying then he could easily get more out of these players than previous coaches
