re: Track Coach Concerns...

has to go through an official charity or something, which of course there are school forms/approvals there, IRS too.
It gets a little fuzzy there, and I don't know the answers. And "fuzzy" is how people like Tony Brown's dad's medical bills get paid for by the REC.
That's why compliance doesn't want anyone touching it until he's a student, not a recruit. AND why to involve TAF instead of an informal group. They know how to do it right. I think it boils down to "how do you give money to a family without it being impermissible benefits". Especially when a can of soda can be considered an impermissible benefit, recruit or student-athelete. So, probably- I'm not sure, the money can be spent on certain things for the family (food, clothes, etc???).

Yeah, the disconnect is that one school was willing to foot the family's medical bills and another wasn't.

I think they should fire everyone and shut down the athletic program for two years.

Skip Bertman dropped the ball when he LET Pat Henry walk away to A&M
Posted on 1/17/14 at 12:57 pm to oldschoolgreats
Bama REC paid a lump sum for the fathers medical bills.
There will be medical costs for future care and this is what Bama is setting a fund up. It'll be pimped out on TV broadcasts everytime Tony Brown makes a play. The kind hearted and compassionate Nick Saban setup a fund to help the Brown family with their medical costs. Bama takes care of their own, just one big happy family!

I hope this is sarcasm, because if you actually believe this then you aren't very bright.

Glad at least Speedy and Lee Chat get it.
When Bertman's ego didn't send anyone out to the airport to greet home the last Henry natty title winning T&F teams. And wouldn't give the man a raise, nor build a facility for his hardware hauling squads to dress and shower on-site instead of dorms..
It was pennywise and pound foolish. I've heard stories from parents of LSU Track athletes about Bertman/Henry requests.
The Buddy Songy mantra 'Track isn't a pimple on LSU Football @ss' thing is silly by many LSU fans.
T&F can make a difference in one or two athletes minds at times, Henry here in BR was an asset.
And even if it didn't really aid in terms of Football, the nominal cost to have kept Henry's hardware hauls in BR for mere school NCAA Title Tally Purposes/Sear Cup-esque crapola, was well worth a few hundred K out of the abundant coffers.
The symbiotic nature of title winning programs can have spillover effect in competitive nature among campus athletes(re:Brodhead era..2000s at LSU..Bama of current..Fla in mid 2000s..etc..)
LSU T&f, is much like LSU Football, it's still elite, still ranked highly, yet also looking up in the standings at a former LSU HC now at rival SEC school that wins the lionshare of hardware.

I'm not getting involved in the Brown mess because its been explained in this thread. Btw I have no issue with what Bama did and is doing with that. To me that's good recruiting. Illegal to the NCAA but fair in recruiting. LSU isn't as squeeky clean on these matters as some want to think.
As for Hunter, he wasn't highly sought after by our track program, hence why the track coaches didn't really press him at all. Also didn't help that Hunters coach was leading his recruitment and pushing Tennessee and close to home. Btw, where is Hunter and how has that high jump career worked out?

It's been a rampant rumor that Bama paid the Browns family medical bills when the father had a stroke.
Does anyone know where this rumor started?

LSU paid for a recruits fathers medical bills last year. I know that for a fact! It happens everywhere!

Shhhhhhh. That doesn't match that narrative we're going for here. No way a kid could simply not want to go here. It has to be that he had family/handlers that pushed him to go someplace else.

brown went to bama because of saban...nothing more, nothing less
He went to be coached by Saban, the DB coach the media heralds as the best in the country when in reality he is no where near the best. The best place for DB's is LSU right now and it cannot be disputed.

You think we are below average now, you should check how horrible we were when Henry was here.
