You ever heard the story of the guy who goes in a bar and buys drinks for a girl all night. And when it is time to go she goes home with another guy? This is what recruiting has become. Wine and dine and offer your best, only to have them leave with someone else. I know that this analogy is off a bit but. They can just use you to drive up the bid.

Other than the guaranteed rookie deals, I don't think there is anything preventing a player from putting their services up for bid, annually, with 1 year deals.
It's just no longer as lucrative in the pros becuase players want the guaranteed money in case of injury.
