Seems to me Stamps would have to improve significantly to play. Im not saying that can’t happen but he was consistently beaten all season.
Like Woodland, Toviano and Spears, he will have his opportunity to stay on the field. The difference is, now they will all be competing against a bunch of talented and experienced guys. None of these young players will be handed time because they are instantly more talented that anyone else we have in the secondary.
If any of these younger guys gets a starting spot or rotation snaps, they will have earned it. If not, they got beat out by better and more experienced guys. The good thing about the secondary for 25 is that everyone will have to compete vs a group who all have high-end P4 talent to see the field. We didn’t have that the previous two seasons and it will push development and improvement.

I don’t really understand why everyone is assuming Perkins goes back to LB when he was playing at star most recently before his injury. Did Kelly/Baker make a comment about it or something?
That’s not technically true. We played mostly in a 4-3 the UCLA game, and we did the same in our last three games playing mobile QBs. That was the first game where they shifted him, at least until he was injured. So Perkins was playing the same OLB role he did for most of 23. That’s not a radically different role than Star, but it still has Perkins playing as an LB. Just not an ILB. He’s much more comfortable in that outside role, even when he has to handle some coverage.
If Perkins plays as an OLB, Star, or both, he will not be on the field if the staff uses a Nickle. I think that was the point being made. I don’t think the staff will put him back inside again, especially after how much more comfortable Keys looked there.

Stamps led the defense in snaps last year by far. Safe to say he is going to play somewhere, in some capacity

while I don't completely disagree, I can't imagine our backfield wouldn't be better, much better, than lthis past year.

If he’s not on the field in the Nickel package, I would think he’d play both (OLB and Star). There’s a somewhat fine distinction between a Sam LB and the Star anyway as you mentioned, and presumably we wouldn’t want him on the sidelines in 2 of our 3 main personnel packages.
It’s just hard for me to imagine that happening. I realize everyone has different ideas about how Perkins should be utilized, but I imagine most would agree that he needs to be on the field as much as possible regardless.
So to me it’s either.. he plays Will LB and stays on the field in all 3 packages, or he plays Star + Sam LB and stays on the field for all but the Nickel package.

I think he’s star in our base D and he replaces Keys as the 2nd LB if we have a true nickel on the field. That was my original point.

If be curious to know what % of defensive snaps last year we actually had a true Nickel on the field. It seemed to me like we spent way more time in the 4-3 or Star but I don’t know the numbers.
To your point about replacing Keys - I could see that as well, although it does add more moving pieces.

Here’s the problem with that- we’ve already seen that Perkins just does not have the natural instincts to play inside. He just doesn’t. He’s tried twice and we know Baker is a really good LB coach. It just hasn’t worked. His natural strengths are OLB and as a spot edge rusher (when used creatively).
On the flip side, Keys looked much more at home inside as a true freshman thrown into the fire straight in SEC play. He’s just a better and more natural fit in that role. Why would we take him off the field for Perkins if he’s a better fit next to Weeks?

We should know more based on what we see this spring, but that could have been because of the overall weakness of the secondary. We will have the talent and numbers in the CB room to play a competent Nickle when needed now, at least vs more pass-heavy teams.

I haven’t seen anything from Stamps that he should be starting at all.
