He's just not SEC caliber. Don't know if it was since the injury or not, but he can't hang at this level. 5* kid that just didn't pan out. If he wants a future in football, go to a smaller school and ball out to show scouts you're capable. He probably won't see the field next year.'

I've been on Dumervil's side since day one but it's time to fish or cut bait. Physically capable but when he saw the field in 20' he looked tentative if not confused.

He was a true freshman playing OT in a year with no non-conference games. I don't know why we expect so much out of these kids as freshmen. Ideally he shouldn't have even needed to see the field in 2020, or 2021 for that matter.

That's what I'm thinking. Good advice to drop down a level - like Turner, Harris, and Payne - and show you can play.
Here's a thing though. We have excellent evaluators and Coaches with past history of success in developing and sending OL on to play on Sundays. If there is something one or two of the backups have to warrant a spot on the roster they will recognize it but the way we're bringing in new blood/making offers, I've gotta think there aren't too many examples of hidden prowess.

Barely seeing the field in each year certainly didn't help him.
Look, unless its Stingley, Ricks, Emery - or even Howard - that come in all ballywhooed, the only expectation I have of a Freshman that finds the field is that he can just hold his own.
Each of these guys only played because of injury that first year. Martinez was in the same class and showed some savvy when he got in there in 20' that Dumey did not. MM got a couple starts last season if I'm not mistaken but he - at the least - held his own in 20'.
Actually, I'm looking for MM to make a push and start at one of the 3 inside OL line positions. We'll see.

It was rumored at the same time McGlothern was sent packing, but he hasn’t made a move yet.

I believe Pig Cage needs to be here another year to get a scholarship and not count as an initial counter.

The rule says they have to be enrolled for one academic year before they can receive a scholarship without being an initial counter. So if they were to award him a scholarship starting in the fall he shouldn’t be an initial counter, unless I’m missing something.

This is going to be Dumervil’s 3rd year at LSU. He was highly recruited and was considered our top OL signing in the last several years. His time has come to shine.

Quick Question, when a player enters the Transfer Portal, is it up to LSU to accept him back on Scholarship if he wants to return?

Nope. They can but school is not required to.

Correct. A player is basically renouncing their scholarship when they enter the portal. The school is not obligated to renew it if they decide they would like to stay.

To be honest I’m not 100% sure. The news reports at the time (October if 2020) said we self-imposed a reduction of 8 scholarships over “the next two seasons” which would presumably mean ‘21 and ‘22. But I can’t find an actual release with the exact details.. just news reports that all say the same thing.

I know the bowl ban that they tacked on was for 2021 and everyone laughed because (at the time) it looked like we weren’t going to be bowl eligible anyway. But at least that was still technically a future penalty. The scholarship reduction would be different, as we would have already had our scholarship numbers set in stone for that year.

So I don’t know. I hope you guys are right and it was 2020-2021.

Not only that, it also gives the school grounds for cancellation starting in the next academic term. So if a player’s scholarship is for a one year period (fall-spring) and they enter the portal before the start of the spring semester, the school can pull their scholarship for the spring.

Once the semester starts the player’s aid is basically locked in.

I know that’s kind of what you were getting at, just pointing out that cancellation can be sooner than non-renewal.

That was what I had in mind, but your clarification is more accurate.

In fact, if a player enters the portal mid-season, I don’t think the school has any obligations from that point on. I think they could cancel the player’s scholarship immediately, without having to wait for the end of the term.

From what I’ve read it’s the next academic term. However, if they enter the portal between semesters it can be immediate (since the next term hasn’t started yet).

From the D1 Manual:
quote:

. . . however, the student-athlete’s financial aid may not be reduced or canceled until the end of the regular academic term in which written notification of transfer is received. If a student-athlete provides written notification of transfer to the institution between regular academic terms (winter break, summer break) the institution may reduce or cancel the financial aid immediately.
