Auburn and Florida with a tie 198.575 and so many 10 routines. Judging was interesting tonight to say the least.

A good article in the Advocate concerning last night's meet and what happened on Kentucky's last beam routine.

Does anyone know where we can find a link to the post-meet press conference referenced in that article.

Also, if Kiya is out next week, it is a huge blow.

Glad to at least hear that Jay acknowledged that notwithstanding that bonkers beam issue, he knew that we didn’t position ourselves to win.

But on that beam issue - if she knocked it out, after she’d fallen - that’s a loophole for any gymnast that falls and are able to replicate it (not sure if that would be possible, but still )

Next year will be a struggle too (although I want to be optimistic).

I’m actually a tad bit optimistic. With the super seniors *finally* gone, Jay has no choice but to throw out new routines. Whether they’re competition ready or not is a different story.

Honestly it was pure luck on Kentucky’s end. The replay shows she was gonna screw up that dismount regardless.

With 5 super seniors it’s pretty inexcusable to not be focused during warm ups. Add that to another reason it’s time for them to go…lack of leadership.

Jay said they were distracted, had several gymnasts mess up which put a strain on others trying to get touches in, made everyone anxious. He said the whole day was just off.

Also, he said AJ would have gone on vault for Kiya if she couldn’t go. Would have liked to see her instead of Sami or Sarah.

This team, overall, is not mentally tough for whatever reason. Time for Ashleigh Gnat to rally them. She was one of the most aggressive, toughest both mentally & physically we’ve had, it might help their focus.
Something did seem off last night and that beam redo sucked.

I know - everyone says be nice to the super seniors, but they never have been mentally tough. I think some of that is top down - if those girls don’t have the resilience/confidence then it may be hard for others (who don’t come by it naturally, a la Kai, Haleigh, and Kiya) to feel that way.

Also, maybe Kai being out is really affecting them, as Jay has alluded to - not just routines, but like the whole vibe/environment. Which then begs the question - how to get her more involved in leadership even when she can’t compete/train as normal

Yeah I am extremely optimistic for next year onward.

They have made great contributions to the program and nothing against the Super Seniors and it is not their fault, but it's not their time anymore and Jay has enabled them to really hold this team back on certain events and they are blocking young gymnasts from progressing. A lot of them should be used as 1 event specialists, but they are being being put in position they are not capable of delivering a big score in.

Coach Jay has been way too conservative with the lineups and he has had to rely on old trusted gymnasts instead of taking chances on talent underclassmen. Let KJ, Finnegan, Jeffrey, Tatum get some live reps in now so for next year onward it's not a strange feeling for them. Get over them being freshman the top teams in the nation are relying on freshman to deliver for them... why not us? KJ can be a star. Finnegan can be a star. Let them run wild and fly. Let them make mistakes instead of letting Durante and Edwards make mistakes on beam and vault.

We have a potential top bar lineup of Kiya, Jeffrey, Finnegan, Aloyna, Bryant, Durante... but we will never see it because reasons.

Jay doesn't take risks. If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got. We keep sending the same super senior depth players out there and they keep making the same mistakes and putting up the same good-but-not-great 9.825 and we keep getting the same 197.5.

This team can make it out of regionals, but they gotta clean it up. The talent is there. Hopefully last night was a reality check.

I agree as well Pippa and have been saying the same for weeks now. Why is Jeffrey’s an alternate on vault? Why isn’t Aleah in on bars ? This team has talent and it’s so disheartening to see the same lineups with the same form issues and low scores. I feel like this team is better than last years team and was a shot away at finals. This year I see a regression and that eludes to the coach. Regardless of all the accolades Jay Clark has, it’s something about him I don’t like. Him and Chris Waller are in the same boat to me personality wise. He’s not personable. He uses all these big words in his interviews that really seems like excuses. If I was a reporter my question would be where is the depth, can the team contend for a title, and lineup selections that need to be changed because of inconsistency. Instead the questions are always about Kiya, Haleigh, or Alyona and injuries. There’s 17 others on the team. think when DD was there, she shielded him as well as Suzanne at Georgia. He didn’t get the criticism until now because he is the top of the program. Love the program, love the athletes, not impressed with the coach. Sorry not sorry. Sports are subjective and me being a fan complaing is the same way I felt about Drew Brees and the saints. I don’t have to be able to do a double lay to notice obvious form issues and a gymnast who falls on beam and have lackluster scoring to see it’s a problem with the head coach and his lineup selections. Im disappointed and scared for the program. It’s to much parity regardless of how scoring is to be mediocre. I preached last season how LSU barely made it out of regionals, this season idk if that will be done if something doesn’t change quickly

I agree here too. I give Jay another year or 2 before I start getting really concerned.

Also, how long will we be able to keep the Griffiths? They will definitely be in contention for the UGA job that will almost assuredly be open after the season.

also I have to remind myself this:
While it does feel like the sky is falling, have to remember we have had Haleigh and Kiya both compete in AA together only once this year (a big win vs. Auburn) and both have been understandably handled with kids gloves for most of the season in order to be saved for postseason.

If they(especially Kiya) can not be on a figurative pitch count and are allowed to compete in AA full out come post-season, we will make some serious noise. Haleigh & Kiya are as good a 1-2 punch as any other duo in the nation IMO.

Coach Jay has gotta let the playmakers make plays. Simple as.

Kiya and Haleigh can’t carry the whole team, especially when they’ve been injury prone this year. Others need to step up and stop depending on them to be the saviors.

Also, I know we lost yesterday, but I’ve had a whole day to really digest the meet. LSU really didn’t do all that bad. I feel a lot of routines were underscored compared to other teams last night. I think the worst event was floor, which was because of uncharacteristic mistakes. While I still do feel it’s going to be tough to make it out of regionals, I think the girls will be motivated going forward. I think it’s time for the “me against the world” or “LSU versus everybody” attitude. Clearly LSU has “fallen from grace” in the eyes of the gymternet (and judges) and I think the girls should use that as motivation.

Do y’all think DD would consider coming back if things get too out of hand? She still seems to be really involved judging at intersquads and attending meets. I can totally see that happening!

I totally agree tlricks04!

It is amazing how Suni Lee has made an impact on the Auburn team which exudes a confidence never seen before. Take her way and one has to wonder if that confidence would decline.

Auburn's beam has never been as solid as it is at this point. They perform with artistry and sureness week after week. Their movements are slow and deliberate where several of our girls rush through and do not showcase the skills. Christina has great artistry most of the time with her presentation. Aleah has good artistry as well and Haleigh is a rock. I wish Gnat would recognize this and encourage every girl to take the time to showcase their movements.

JC thinks our beam is fine but it could be so much better when routines are performed with confidence and movements of artistry. I realize this has a lot to do with one's mental focus.

I saw on social media where Auburn competes again on Sunday and can tie LSU's NQS if the score is a 197.5+ or even surpass us with a 197.6. They have another opportunity next week with a road trip. We are a meet short to improve more but it is what it is. One way or another Auburn is a force this year. I hope our girls will be on fire the rest of the season and Jay will make adjustments with preparation.

Quote: CGN

College Gym News@collegegymnews_·Mar 4 LSU had a lower home score to drop than Auburn, which is why it sits above. LSU's current NQS is 197.615 to Auburn's 197.535. Auburn does compete again Sunday. It can move up to a tie with LSU with a 197.575, into No. 5 on its own with a 197.600 and into No. 4 with a season high.

Quote TweetC??@TeamHeatherBB · Mar 4Replying to @collegegymnews_Auburn has to be closing in on LSU after tonight...

Auburn’s rise to the top is 100% the Suni effect. They have the same team & coaching staff and added Groth & Suni. It seems the entire team is benefitting score wise from Suni.

I don’t agree but it is what it is and Auburn will be a thorn in our side for as long as Suni is there.
