Walkons are eligible for NIL endorsements.

Why not have an extra 15-20 guys on the roster above the 85 limit by signing good players as Walkons and paying them more than enough to cover the lack of a scholarship plus extra cash money to live on?

Gives you more protection from portal losses and deepens the bench

I know about BYU. I’m talking Alabama, Texas, Ohio State type programs taking 30 kids every year because they are willing to spend an extra $1m to create a practice squad

Isn’t there some law prohibiting players being recruited for scholarships as being walk-ons? I know they can gray shirts but isn’t that only for one year. Thought this was in place to prevent this from happening. I could be way off though

Well, that one is a little tricky.

NCAA limits roster size (total) to 105 until the first day of class (or first game) and then there is no limit.

But, it is very possible to get those 20 (over and above the 85 scholarship limit to the 105 preseason roster limit) to be highly rated players and using NIL money to "put in their pocket" that they would, *wink & nod* then gratefully turn around and pay their tuition with.

Someone said in another post you can't do that because they were "recruited". Technically, that isn't true. In reality the NCAA would damn sure try to use that to pursue schools. But, technically, that applies to blue shirts only. Not walkons. If they don't sign financial aid agreements and they don't sign a LOI (committing the school to provide FA), then they are walkons and whether they were recruited or not is beside the point- technically.

Just tell all your players up front they will not be scholarship players but all their expenses will be paid for.

The issue you would end up having from this though is transfers out due to lack of playing time.

Yep. And they're already gonna have that problem. Seems to me they are just gonna load up as many players as they can and face that problem when they come to it. They just get to have a big tryout camp other schools can't afford.
The Coaches will take the guys they want and the rest will be processed (read screwed) and have to transfer or walk on the same way somewhere else.

Sounds like something Tricky Nicky would have already concocted in his evil little mind.

Yeah, bet he had all the details worked out before he informed the NCAA that he had decided NIL would come to pass.

You are correct. The source I was relying on for that information was probably confusing those circumstances or only meaning it to apply in those cases. The existence of preferred walk ons should have clued me into the fact that it was a misinterpretation.

Schools could potentially try to exploit NILs in that manner, but they would be leaving themselves open to poaching with no signed LOI or FA. The NCAA could close the loophole pretty easily by mandating that any players receiving NILs be included as initial counters in the first year and against the 85 limit in all years.
