Let me clear this up some
My LSU buddy spoke with Joe Alleva about this. Alleva (doesn't follow recruiting closely) heard from the Staff that Benton was worried about playing time and with the addition of RR at LSU, really wanted out of his pledge to LSU. (not exact words, but that is basically the gist of it).
That info, makes sense of the AU trip weeks ago.. He was figuring out that RR was coming to LSU...getting a back up plan
TIFWIW!
Tooth, I believe I am right and I beleive Emmitt, and I have followed this very closely...
People think the issue is Emmitt was worried about RR PT, but actually it was the other way around.. it was DB PT time he was worried about (most don't believe that)... Emmitt perceived that DB should be a priority in the equation because he waited 2 years.. The families talk, get along etc..
Randle wanted LSU ! Period..His father said in that interview, he likes Miles and will enjoy his son at LSU "obviously"..
DB wanted LSU also, but when he realized the reality of PT next season, his best choice now is at AU relative to his situation..
Basically Rueben was telling his father at 1 am..I can't worry about DB's plans, I want LSU...I am not sacrificing what I want for him
Perhaps Miles had already helped Benton with that choice earlier in the evening. That part I have no clue
This is why all parties are happy..
Miles knows that Benton probably will be grade issue player come next December anyways.
Emmitt basically told Miles.. "Look Benton doesn't want to be at LSU if we come on board now...He wants to play early, we don't want to interfer with that coach"
"But if you say, stick to your committment, then he will" (Consider the family connections)

well tell your buddy that he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. If there families are sooo close, then why did RR not even know that DB was qualified until right before signing day. It's b/c they were trying to keep that on the DL so that they could sign both of them. I'm pretty sure if you talk to anybody from Bastrop, they will tell you that their families are not close. Listen to Emmitt Randle talk, all he cares about is his son, they don't care about DB.

Listen to Emmitt Randle talk

quote:The guy sounds like an idiot to me. He says he didn't "make an ultimatum" to Miles, but yet, he did. He's just using weasel words now to try to clean it up after the fact.
Depends on the context you read it in. Because he precedes this comment with something along the lines of "I didn't give him an ultimatum...I just told him how it was going to be". Miles still had a decision to make, and I think he made the right one.

Wow, this fable was silly to begin with but now it is just becoming the Titantic.
No, Benton's "family" and the Randles are not close. Benton has stated that he and RR themselves are not even really close. They don't speak on the phone or text each other, etc.
Please, just make up something that has some tiny piece of logic in it. Enough with this Emmitt was trying to help Benton by getting his schollie pulled. Benton didn't need any help getting out of his "pledge" to LSU.
One party that was not happy is Bradshaw, You can believe that.

One person has the answers and thats Benton...problem...benton hasnt said anything.
Its amazing all the outpouring of support for Deangelo after the fact. This place would have been in meltdown mode had Rueben gotten away.

Emmit Randle isn't helpping out his son. He should just set back and let this whole thing blow over. But he' not so my guess is he doesn't want "his" time in the spot light to end, IMO.

After listening to Mr. Randall and reading ALL the post on this....I am struck by one thing. Mr. Randall never once mentioned anything about what school can best EDUCATION him for his chosen profession in all of this. And isn't that what scholarships are for? An education. Not playing time so my son can be seen and get drafted by an NFL team an make millions of dollars so I can retire. Mr. Randall says he wants what's best for his son but never once mentioned education....only PLAYING TIME !!!!!!which leads me to believe the NFL is the chosen profession. But how many college athletes actually make it in pro sports? Not many! Maybe he will and maybe he won't don't know .....can't predict the future. But it seems to me this is all about playing time, and being exposed to the NFL more than anything.

Well now that the news has come out that Benton wanted to go to Auburn instead of LSU, the bad taste I had in mouth over this entire affair has dissipated. Nevertheless, Benton did tell one reporter he was going to LSU on Tuesday and Emmett Randle did give Miles an ultimatum, no matter what he says. Anyway, since in the end everyone is happy, I’m happy, and it is best that we all forget about this sordid affair, let it go now, and start looking forward to the future.
ETA: Benton wanting to go to Auburn makes Miles decision much more understandable as well.

For the many weeks leading up to signing day the attention given to Randle was increasing day by day until the night before signing day the frenzy had become out of control.
I suggested at the time that the Randles were using the "I don't know where I'm going to school" stance to give more media play of Randle and it worked. They, in my opinion, got what they wanted. Lots of folks in the media were speaking his name. The sports shows were into it and added to the frenzy and they were basking in the attention.
They had positioned themselves to be in a bidding war between LSU, Bama and OK with the most aggressive of the three winning the commitment of the guy.
But that plan is really a two edged sword. You don't play the 'everybody look at me' game and when it's over expect to suddenly be exempt from the attention you've demanded for so long. You're then up for analysis. When questions arise, legitimately, such as the demands and threats of the parent of Randle, those are going to be examined because of the attention frenzy cultivated in the many weeks prior to that. You've asked for it. You've caused it. It's your fault.
This will die down in the off season, but will again be in the forefront come football time. The two edged sword will again come into play. Randle's dropped passes, wrong routes and errors that are part of the game will be greatly magnified because of the sword cutting the other way. Great that it was used during the recruiting process but you're going to have to live with the attention now.
LSU had many quality recruits this year, probably the best year we've ever had. Good guys. Committed guys. Quality character. All of them analyzed which school was going to offer them the best opportunity for an education and playing time and they made their decision. No grandstanding. No coercion by the parents. They decided and committed. That speaks WELL of their character and commitment to the team. Team players.
And those are the players who will determine the success or failure of the team, along with the coaches.....not one media hound such as Randle will do it.
