First off, their defensive line play has been excellent, so he can show that they take talented guys and can actually coach them to produce on the field.
Second, they're a contende, which is something Burch apparently wanted.
Third, they're not Clemson.
Fourth, and probably most importantly, they're much closer to home than LSU, so it's likely this is the compromise to make mom happy.
I appreciate your contributions to this board, but these seem like pretty obvious points. I don't think there's any need for further insinuation.

that's the first thing that came to mind too. LSU is far away, and he doesn't want to play for lame duck coach like Muschamp. It sucks, but it makes a lot of sense.

I don't think it's necessarily "toying" with his future to have a preference on where he goes and to be involved in the process. Apparently she's an SC alum, so I think it's natural that that's her preference. I haven't read anything to suggest that she's making the decision for him though.

The simplest conclusion is probably the correct one.
Kirby's a very talented recruiter. Be it bags or whatever, he's a force to be reckoned with when he's on a recruit.
