Perkins would be forced to play ILB too early

Could Perkins step up and be great at ILB? Sure, it’s his projected future position. but that’s the QB of the defense and requires elite understanding of the system. Idk if he’s ready for that just yet.

He's going to be here 3 years

Next year is 2

So you think we get 1 impact year from him? Or that he shouldn't play LB?

You do realize there are TWO ILBs on the field. At the same time. Together. Maybe the other, more experienced ILB can take the lead there on defensive organization while Perkins gets up to speed. You ever think about that? I’m guessing not.

Baws! Where in the Blue frick did talk about Perkins playing INSIDE Linebacker come from? And WHO said it was his projected future position?
WORLD CLASS Speed and you are going to limit his absolutely ELITE play making ability by pigeonholing him at ILB? WTF?
Dude is gonna line up anywhere from hand in the dirt to Safety! Blitz packages just for him and match up coverages! Sheesh!
Help me out here, nine-four!

My comment was solely related to Perkins having to be the “QB of the defense” when he plays at ILB, which he will. My point was that Penn is more experienced and can carry more of that load.

I posted what’s below in a different thread to someone saying similar. Basically I agree with some of what you are saying:

Perkins is NOT a full time Jack LB/Edge. He just isn’t. He’s on the small size for that position and he is a liability up front against the run, as we saw against both A&M and UGA. We can’t rely on him to set that edge consistently and we have guys who are physically better suited to do that.

Perkins will play some snaps there, especially on passing downs, as he did this season. I think we all know that. He will also play on occasion as an OLB when the situation allows, but we don’t use 3 LBs that often. No one does anymore. Because of this, Perkins will also play a lot of ILB, and House will put him in position to be just as disruptive when he’s there.

The OP is stuck in arbitrary notions about static defensive position roles and locked-in schemes. If he paid any attention this season, House doesn’t work like that. O and the “aggressive 4-3” are dead and gone. We played multiple defensive formations and moved guys around constantly. Some of that was due to injuries and depth issues, but some was also to try and create matchups, especially using Perkins. House is known for this.

So even if Perkins plays lot of his snaps at ILB, he’s still going to be moving around and pressuring from different gaps. Go back and watch how House will swap LBs with D Linemen on zone pressures to create confusion on where guys are coming from and who to key on. We got better at disguising what we were doing as the season went on. With an off-season to learn and gain more experience, Perkins will be a disruptive force wherever House lines him up. And again, that will be in multiple positions around the field in a single game.

You should also want Womack to become the disruptive force many expect him to be, and to have him and Perkins playing together. We want multiple difference-makers on the field at the same time. He’s built to play Edge full time and will hopefully lock the starting role down at some point next season.

I'd be real happy if that was his last visit before he makes his decision.
Everything about this Staff says they've been in touch and know if he's interested.
If we hear Omar Speights from Oregon State is coming on a visit it could mean that we know Jackson isn't interested but it could also serve to nudge him along toward making a decision about LSU if he truly hasn't made up his mind yet.
Either way, KJ is a Marketing major. He knows what he's doing.

It's too late for me to make a cogent argument/comment other than we disagree and agree. Maybe tomorrow.

I think we agree more than disagree. Like you, I think House will move Perk around a lot and use him in different ways.

I think the majority of his snaps will come at ILB, simply because we will only play 2 LBs most of the time and he isn’t built to play Edge every down. Just our portal activity and recruiting at that position should tell you that the staff agrees that Perkins isn’t the future star at that position.

But even if Perkins technically plays ILB most of his snaps never year, we’ve seen how House works. He will still move him all over. He will change spots with DL and Safeties in all kinds of blitz combos. He won’t be locked into a traditional 3-4 LB role in this defense because of how multiple House is with his defense.

One thing I can say, if I can jump into this conversation, is it's going to be a lot more fun playing inside linebacker this year than it's been, because with the portal additions and Smith coming back LSU is going to be deeper and more physical on the interior of the defensive line than we've been.

Meaning it's going to be a good bit harder to get to the second level to block LSU's linebackers. And they're going to be able to fly around and make plays more often.

So I don't think anybody should be scared of Perkins playing one of the two ILB spots in a 4-2 base. He'll still be able to hunt from that spot, and more to the point he's going to move around a ton from it.

Penn is the guy who'll be more of a static Mike LB. He and West weeks will do that.

What getting Jackson or Speights would do would be to give you a rotation of those ILB's for when you're able to play more of a 4-3 defense, with Perkins as the third linebacker you can really use as an attacker.

If we a relying on Wit weeks we are in trouble . I would rather an experienced thumper in the middle from the portal. Yes we have Perk 40 but if you look at the film he struggled playing the traditional LB position. Let him hunt the Qb and roam all over the field.

I'll remind you he was a freshman. They do tend to get better.

They're still going to use him to fly around. But he's also going to play some ILB and he'll learn how to do it exceptionally well.

He did play the position in high school. He just didn't do it exclusively. He's still got a lot of developing to do. Hell, he's only 220 pounds and he'll probably be 240-245 before he leaves out of here.
