What would you call Dexter Blackmon? Scout doesn't even have a picture of the kid.

Blackmon

Well...we are over half a year from signing day...He could have 20 offers by then. For right now ill say he's a damn fine Defensive Lineman who dominated in the LSU camp and did very well in the others.

You dont think he's gonna be at least a 3-star by early next year?

A guy with only an offer from Troy at the time he commits is a sleeper.

If he ends up a 4-star by the end of the year, LSU still stole a sleeper because they found him when nobody was talking about him and nobody was offering him.

He comes from a small town school with not a very good record. Just because LSU is the first on the scene and "discovers" a great talent...doesnt make him a sleeper in my mind. If no one else offers him and LSU is really the only one who considers him a talent, then yes, Id agree he's a sleeper.

I think we are just arguing semantics. Discovering someone before others do...or sleeper? You may be right in calling him a sleeper at this time..but I think it's too early.

Now if the guy was on a big time high school, with good film available...playing in championships...and LSU was the only one on the scene..then ya...big sleeper.

Yep, I think we mean a little bit different things when we say "sleeper". Ain't no thing.

.then how many real sleepers are you gonna have in a program that is consistantly in the top 5 recruiting wise? I guess none.

you'll get some. that's kind of the point

it's rare to have a top recruiting program get a bunch of sleeper-types, which is why this thread was made, i believe

at this stage in the process, discovering and offering a commitable offer to a kid that nobody else has really recruited is a sleeper recruit

Deangelo Peterson is a borderline sleeper. He blew up at Florida's FNL camp but other than that no one really knew a whole bunch about him. Also his HS teammate Lavar Edwards could also be considered a sleeper. If I'm not mistaken they were both originally from New Orleans, got lost in the shuffle of Katrina and moved around with Desire St Academy.

But both of those are borderline. I think a real sleeper was Jermaine Cunningham from Florida. He was another linebacker from Stone Mountain Stephenson that graduated with Riley, Sheppard and Marcus Ball, who were all more highly thought of than Cunningham. Look how that worked out.

i believe this is correct and was discussed in the main commitment thread. i'd agree somewhat with them being sleepers, but Katrina is kind of a real excuse as to why these kids weren't evaluated.

good example of another school. i mean people are saying riley/sheppard are sleepers, so a lesser-known, lesser-recruited guy has to be one

I was wrong no how highly thought of he was, but I remember LSU not going after him very hard despite recruiting two of his teammates
LINK

ETA: but that Rivals ranking is from the last update they did for that year, so leading up to that he may not have been ranked so highly.

I can agree and understand that point. But if after the kid gets some more exposure (mostly thru camps i guess..since he says he's still open to other schools) and his senior year...and then gets offers from the likes of Bama, AU, Tenn, and others...is he still a sleeper going into the fall of 2010?

Anyhow...I guess i agree he's a sleeper at this very moment. LSU is first on the spot for this kid.

Yes.

Curious to see how they pan out the next couple of years. I think it's a good thing that our coaches trust their own evaluations instead of just following the herd...I'll feel better when several of these kids blossom into solid players (or even stars) and validate the coaches' evaluations.

Brockers was not a sleeper DE, he was a 4-star on both major recruiting sites.
4* on Scout
4* on Rivals

One sleeper I haven't seen mentioned is Stevan Ridley. He was virtually unknown when offered by LSU, and other than Ole Miss I think he had very few offers. If I remember right he decommitted from Ole Miss after LSU offered him.

Later in the year his stock rose but he might qualify as a sleeper, and he's looked good in his limited time on the field so far.

+1 Wonder if the Alabama reps for Rivals and Scout will be pulling for this kid?

Check the updates on your link. There were a bunch of updates on him and he was in the 250 as early as the Summer. Definitely not a sleeper.

Peterson blew up at the Florida camp after her had blown up at the LSU camp and had accepted an offer from LSU. At the time of the commitment, he was an unknown. It remains to be seen what his contribution will be.
