My Grade for this Class (Kinda Long but I Think it's Decent haha)

Posted on 2/3/11 at 5:50 pm
So I posted my abbreviated thoughts in a different thread, but it turned into a big flame, name-calling fest so I figured I'd try again. For anyone who has intelligible critiques, comments or questions please join in. I am always eager and willing to discuss Tiger football. For any who simply wish to sling mud and insults, please stay away. Now on to the thoughts.
Recruiting class grade: A/A-
Recruiting job by the coaches: C+/B-
Seems awful weird to break these into two different categories, but I think it's extremely important and worth discussing. Let's be honest there are simply some states that are easier to recruit to than others. A state like Louisiana where you have a continent-sized amount of talent and studs everywhere plus only one flagship school is basically a recruiting Casino where you're Rainman.
I made the Clemson example in the other thread and I think it still holds plenty of water. South Carolina didn't produce a single 5 star this year whereas Louisiana produced 3. However, a team with a losing record last year signed more 5 stars than us, all out-of-state.
Some were asking if an out-of-state recruit counts for more than an instate recruit. No, this is obviously not true, but what is true is it's significantly more difficult to get someone like Tony Steward to say in front of a packed gym that was doing the Tomahawk chant and waving FSU flags that he was going to their division rival than it was for LSU coaches to get someone like Collins to go to LSU.
The saving graces of this coaching staff when it comes to recruiting are Wilson and Cooper. You can directly attribute the LOIs of Freak and Landry to Wilson. Without him, they don't sign here. And Cooper once again validated his skills as being the best DB evaluator in the nation. Collins, Jenkins and Eugene are all studs who will play in the league with his coaching.
My complaints of the coaching staff are three. First, Chavis simply has got to improve as a recruiter. His developmental skills are second to none, but he really struggles getting the best canvases to work with. I mentioned that this was one of the deepest LB classes in a long time. We really could've added a couple bigtime studs (I think Randle is good but he's still just one).
There were two critiques of this theory. The first was that there are bigtime studs instate next year at LB. First off, I have never EVER been a proponent of the "but we have so-and-so next year" theory. Second, I think the instate crop is somewhat overrated next year; not bad but there are no CJ or Anthony or Stewards in that class.
The second is that we already have plenty of depth at LB. Sure we have quite a few bodies, but we're lacking elite athleticism and playmaking ability IMO. We're also lacking bigtime size. People say we don't need to carry as many LBs because we use so much 4-2-5 personnel, and it is true we have used this personnel quite a lot the past two years.
This was out of necessity not desire IMO and it really hurt our ability to set the edge. Because of this you saw us use under fronts so frequently as well as send Mathieu off the edge so often. The problem with this is you're committing so many bodies to the edge because you're undersized that it really puts pressure on your interior LBS and missed tackles can result in huge gains. An athletic OLB with size like Anthony or Steward would have been monster in this class.
My second critique is our move away from East Texas. I don't know who was supposed to be recruiting this area but they severely dropped the ball this year (and of all the years to do-so). I know there's tons of recruits in Florida but it's so much farther and there's not the LSU contingent like there is in East Texas.
So all in all I think the class is very good but I simply can't give it an A+ or the coaches an A grade when we were out-recruited by Alabama for the 4th year in a row (and by Auburn in 2 out of the 3 sites) in a class that we've been talking up for years. Hell we had three 5 stars committed before the end of the summer and we still couldn't out-do the midget. They also took one less LOI than us so it wasn't our restrictions that hurt us.
That's all. I know many won't read this, but for those who do I'd appreciate any thoughts (looks like we'll all be snowed in too so we have time). Have a good one!

i stopped reading that first paragraph cus you are false.
Before yesterday 51% of our player came from out of state since 2005. This year was a year we didnt have to go out of state. But we did, we got a very good qb, and a good project in rivers. We got a very underrated LB. These are the two positions that we normally have to go oos to pull.
No not every recruit picks LSU just because they live in Louisiana. Greg Robinson is the most recent one. Guys like Rasco and Randle wouldnt wait til signing day to commit to LSU if it was only about the name alone. This day in age most of the top schools are on even playing field when it comes to tradition, money and facilities. Except for USC, thats got hollywood draw to it.
If you researched any you would find that with the addition of frank wilson we recruited nola heavely. Got all the top players in LA except for greg this year. They made a point this year to get the propect from louisiana if available. I think you will see more oos guys next year.

I'm much more excited about our class than the overall ranking would indicate. Not a bad overall ranking but my feelings are this class is top five without a doubt and the ESPN rankings make me shake my head. Again, frick ESPN and their coverage yesterday. Just a terribly slanted job.

one important factor not discussed in your coaches grade is not just how many stars a kid has, but the coaches ability to evaluate talent. This is one area that I feel our staff does a great job. We seem to have a lot of 3 stars year to year that turn into very good players. Guys like Hurst who was passed on by many SEC schools and may be our best OL this year.

Dont forget now, the coaches extend the scholarship not the school. My grade would be A for the class A+ job for the coaches.
This is for finding their needs and finding it from home, and addressing the biggest glaring problem on our team. The QB. This year we had very few guys from LA not go to LSU that has sec west talent. Greg and sylve got away, but we got the better guys. This stuff with raven is just shady, but he is playing in a completely diff conference. This is what you call locking down LA.
Getting a guy like Jernigan or CJ would have just been icing on the cake.

Just the number one consensus player in America. This alone invalidates your entire premise.

I seems that a lack of getting LBers in this class is a sticking point in the low eval for the coaches... I disagree with this as well. There are many young LBers on the roster that our coaches (whose evaluations we value) must like quite a bit and I believe will do well. Next year has many instate LBers (more than I can ever remember) and if we are to stockpile next year, then 2 LBers this year seems to be the max for fear of overloading the roster with youth and thus leading to attrition. Would I have liked for 1 more stud at LBer, yes of course, but I'm not so sure Lewis may not be that in the future

he said Chavis did a job that was slightly more impressive than Moses parting the Red Sea. Otherwise Sheppard was little more than Rocky D...

Attacking your critiques rationally:
1) Clemson always has a pull in Florida. They've landed a lot of big time Florida prospects... so it's not like "Oh why the hell is Clemson getting people and LSU can't?" It's a hell of a lot easier to pull Florida kids to Clemson than it is to LSU.
2) Which LBers do you want us to go after that we didn't?
Here's the guys we offered and their state and choice:
CJ Johnson - MS, Ole Miss
Trey DePriest - OH, Bama
LaTeek Townsend - South Carolina, Clemson
Curt Magitt - Florida, Tennessee
Ryan Shazier - Florida, Ohio State
Kent Turene - Florida, Georgia
Denzel Perryman - Florida, Miami
Travis Hughes - Virginia, UNC
There's a couple more guys in there, but these were the big targets.
Of all the offers, nearly all of them picked a school regionally close.
Of the ones we seriously were in on: CJ Johnson, Ryan Shazier... Johnson picked Ole Miss and wanted to stay in state. Shazier came down to it and picked Ohio State... you win some, you lose some.
I'm just not getting what targets we're supposed to go. I think you're impression as an LSU fan is that EVERY kid wants to come here... and that's just not realistic.
3) Texas recruiting was certainly weak this year, but I think that's part of the reasoning for bringing in Kragthorpe, who has Texas ties.
4) Why are you using recruiting site rankings to judge against the effort? Your example of Bama and Auburn "out recruiting" us, citing the sites as a sample.
I'm not usually one to bitch about it, but there's a couple guys in this class that were certainly underrated/misevaluated. They'll end up proving to be better players than their rankings...

Never said we should add 4 more. Also, like I said, LA's LBs next year are overrated. They're good but there's no 5 stars in the group (unless you consider Collins a LB).

Considering LSU has never signed the number 1 class under Miles I'd have to disagree with your claim that he signed "one of the best recruiting classes in history" prior to Wilson and Cooper's arrival. Also, only people on Tigerdroppings would take offense to me complimenting Cooper and Wilson for their abilities.

I love this propagated Tigerdroppings myth too. Some people on here genuinely think other people spend copious amounts of time on a website in the attempt to dethrone a coach via a message board. Please tell me you realize how stupid this sounds.
