Mike Leach says forget about recruiting a big, strong, athletic QB that isn’t accurate

I 100 percent agree. People get too caught up in measurables. Accuracy has to be number 1. Starts at 30 seconds

He said right.

In the NFL? Sure. Measurables are very important but not so much in college.

People confuse accuracy for footwork and timing.

Actual accuracy(ie throwing a ball in a bucket) is pretty overrated.

Which QB’s are you referring to that could “throw it in a bucket” and weren’t good?

Top 2 have to be accuracy and reading defenses then arm strength mechanics can be taught with the right coaching if they already have it then that’s a plus and makes them more game ready

most of the QBs who win those kinds of competitions. Sean White(Auburn) was a great example.

Leach coaches who I believe will be the under the radar qusterback in the draft this year in Gardner Minshew. I watched several of his games and he’s not just a product of the Leach offense. He can make every throw on the field plus he’s mobile enough to extend a play. On top of all that you can tell he’s just a winner. Every time I watched the kid play he never let up and we always coming right at you. Some team picking in the late rounds will have themselves a good one.

Nope he's a typical Leach QB. Kid was below average at his previous stop and then automatically became this throwing machine under Leach.

Leach's QBs do absolutely nothing in the NFL. Funny thing is I see people post this same shite every year or other year when he has some new QB putting up big numbers. "This guy is a true NFL prospect", "He's not just a system QB", "He's one of the best QBs".

With that said, he's right that accuracy should be #1 to look for, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker if they
don't have it, yet show great potential. He's also not talking about just dropping into the bucket accurate. Leach wants QBs that are pretty damn fundamentally sound with little to no problems in their mechanics.

However, I don't agree with him saying that accuracy can't be fixed past high school. Of course it depends on all parties involved. Prescott for example went from a literally big strong athletic QB who wasn't very accurate, to completing 66% of his passes averaging 8 yards per attempt. Prescott himself has done more in 3 years in the NFL than any Leach QB dating back to Tim Couch.

With today’s 7 on 7 tournament and the amount of football and coaching these top QB’s get in high school their accuracy at that level isn’t going to go up from there usually. Accuracy should be the first thing you look at. If a kid is only completing 50-60 percent of his balls in high school it isn’t going to improve that much when he gets to college throwing into smaller windows. This hasn’t always been the case as high school qb’s used to never receive the amount of coaching they do now.

Agreed with what he said.

When i see a HS QB being recruited, first thing I look at is his completion percentage and TD/INT ratio.

Measureables don’t always matter.
