LSU will have one of the lowest stipends for athletes in SEC

While Auburn and Bama will have the highest. LSU will be allowed to give athletes $3800 per while Bama gives $5,300 per. SEC offices in Tuscoulousa so it comes as no surprise that LSU gets f'ed again by the SEC. How much more blatant can you get in showing favoritism to one school and outright cheating. Doesn't sound like much but for a poor kid from the country or city it could be one more big motivation in what school to choose. Especially if everything seems equal in other respects.

Is there criteria used to establish these stipend amounts?

Blame LSU. They are the ones who submitted their cost of living figures. It's no surprise that the Alabama schools have padded their numbers to gain an advantage. The cost of living went up 35% in two years in the state of Alabama according to the UA athletic dept's study. Allevas unwillingness to take advantage of the NCAA's ineptitude is the problem here.

apparently the individual schools financial aid offices come up with the amount. Of course the athletic dept or SEC offices can but pressure on the financial aid office. There is no one set universal criteria. Funny how Bama and Auburn both somehow come up with the highest amounts.

should just be one set amount, $5000 perhaps, for all NCAA schools to take the monkey business out of it.

LSU once again trying to play by the rules while Bama bends (breaks) them as hard as they can. Bama is going to go all the way with it, they know nothing will be done about it. LSU knows if they pushed it that far they would get sanctions.

The Cost of Attendance is computed by the Financial Aid Office and the Athletic Depts are not allowed to influence this. One other thing I did not think about is that this amount of money will have to paid to all student atheletes not just football.
I don't think MSU can keep it up being the 4th highest in the NCAA without suffering overall.

Ummmmm, who is going to enforce this? The NCAA?

Is there that much of a discrepancy between LSU and Bama?

how do you figure they will suffer? It's just peanuts compared to what the athletic dept brings in. The more you spend on it, the better the athletes you bring in, the more you win, the more money the football program mAkes.

Well Auburn athletics are in the red every single year from trying to keep up with Bama.

We shouldn't let ourselves be outspent on this. The return on what you spend on this should more than be made up for in wins and thus in income to the athletic dept.

wow, did the sec offices even attempt to check the figures?

Cost of living??? I'm sure cost of eggs and milk has gone up...
Oh and that athletes get room and board, soooo what the hell are they basing this on?

This is obviously something that needs to be regulated, unfortunately it probably won't be considering the circumstances.

Everything you want to know about COA funding - Almost
This article is quite comprehensive but for some reason it does not contain Alabama in any of its data... Conspiracy??

If Miss St is paying the 4th highest amount in the NCAA that is a pretty smart move. They should pay the#1 highest amount so that their football program will move up the rankings and bring in more income. If it is to costly because you have to pay all athletes the same amount then you cut out some of your non income making sports so that you will have less athletes to pay.
just looked at the article. Miss ST is not #4 but Auburn is #1 and Bama is not listed, but Bama is the same amount as Auburn according to the times-picayune.

Yep, has nothing to with helping athletes and all to do with competitive advantage.

I'm sure the Gumps don't see it that way even though it is blatantly obvious.
