LSU Players in Portal / Academic Calendar

I was updating my thread on attrition and it hit me that a few of the LSU players in the portal have been there quite a while:
- Koy Moore: October 19
- Bugg Strong: October 27
- Deion Smith: December 8
Obviously Smith is a little different than the other two, but it’s still surprising considering that he should be a highly sought-after player, and the other two guys who entered the portal at the same time (Max Johnson and Landon Jackson) both officially transferred immediately after the fall semester ended.
Looking at the LSU academic calendar:
- Spring classes start January 18.
- Final date to drop classes is January 26.
- Final date to add classes is January 27.
It seems like the probability of any additional players transferring out before the end of the spring semester drops considerably after each of those dates. If a player hasn’t found a home prior to the start of the semester, they would presumably start classes - if they don’t, they run the risk of being academically ineligible (and losing their immediate transfer eligibility) in the event that they don’t find a home in time. Same logic applies to the add/drop dates.
So what does this actually mean? Hell if I know. But I can see three possibilities that make sense:
1. The players are still actively looking to transfer but are just taking their time. Maybe they haven’t found good opportunities, or maybe they aren’t worried about the prospect of transferring after the spring semester and missing spring practices.
2. The players are academically ineligible. In this case they might have to complete the spring semester in order to get their grades in order and have immediate transfer eligibility.
3. The players are considering staying at LSU and/or being recruited hard to come back.
It might be optimistic, but I’m really hoping for #3. Deion Smith looked pretty damned good this year and Bugg Strong is an upperclassman at a position of need. Fingers crossed, I guess.

Players can also easily transfer after the Spring semester.
Not sure in this particular situation what will happen with the players you listed but these players could easily come back for Spring and then transfer in the summer.

I think likely this. They return to school at LSU and enroll somewhere else in the summer

I heard he was in the locker room on a insta story or something recently. Anyone know about that?
Also, they can commit to transferring to X Univ. and still take classes at LSU.

There will be a “second wave” of transfers after spring ball. At every school really.
Better mask up

They won’t have much time. May 1 deadline to enter the portal and play next year. Last year, it was July 1. Moved up. This will be the permanent date going forward.

This. If they aren’t in the portal by May 1 they won’t be eligible for the 2022 season. Spring semester classes don’t end until May 7, and finals don’t end until May 14.
I think we probably see another bump in portal activity between the end of spring camps and May 1. I wouldn’t expect a ton of activity after that (at least not in terms of new players entering the portal).
ETA: I just realized the other poster said after spring football, not after the spring semester. So we are saying the same thing.

They can commit, but AFAIK nothing is official until they actually transfer. I’m not aware of any NLI equivalent for transfer players.
It seems like the timing puts both the players and school at risk if the player doesn’t transfer prior to the spring semester. National signing day for HS recruits is in February. If a transfer commit changes their mind in April, the school could be left scrambling and their only options at that point are the players left in the portal. Schools could get nervous and re-neg on offers as well, leaving the player high and dry.
Could be an interesting dynamic as we move forward.

LSU’s spring game last year was April 17, that would give them 2 full weeks to decide and enter.
The national championship was on the 10th, and both bama and Georgia have guys entering the portal, with 2 weeks before they have to be enrolled in a new school.
