To a degree it is about being able to step in from day 1 and contribute, but more than anything it is about them having elite talent that projects past the college level and into the professionals.
right, understand that. My point is some kids mature later, some of these less than Zeus kids can physically mature quickly and match or exceed these higher rated kids.
Some of these 5* may not have any more of an upside, they may be at their apex.

THIS is the exact reason you do not accept commitments from Houston Bates or Cameron Fordham so early in the process
Didn't Bates get his offer following a LSU camp? Maybe Miles is using a scholly like an award to the most hard working player at his camp to encourage more kids to attend. Sort of like when coaches give a scholly to a walkon who has been with the program awhile.

Sure couldn't hurt to get a big time linebacker. Based on pure measurables this kid is SEC ready right now.

We don't have 7 spots so who doesn't get a seat at the table that wants one.

You also have to realize 4 current commits are not qualified and one is supposed to be a lock for JUCO.

who?

Blue, Tyrann, Simon, and I am pretty sure Porter. The 6'4 kid projected to corner is the one I would be highly surprised if he qualified.

Yeah im concerned about grades w/ simon. Heard he wasnt exactly a star student

We have more spots open than people know. A couple of these guys can be counted back to last year...plus we lost someone that signed last year...Ainsworth.
Blue can count to last year's class...if he qualifies
Adams will too and this is likely the only way LSU accepts his commit
We have several recruits that aren't qualified and some that are fairly far off(Simon)
I think LSU will tell some people if they want to stay on the team, they have to greyshirt(Bates).
Problem solved. I don't think anyone is just going to be told take a hike...

Be honest, were you always a Hester fan? I was more a KW fan til mid way thru Hesters last season because he didn't meet the eye test.

SOmething drastic must have changed with Parker and LSU because in a video interview from the Shrine bowl a few weeks ago he said he was 85% sure he was going to USCe .... he did say from taking with Chavis he seemed like a good coach and would like to visit but he appeared to be all Carolina at that point. It would be huge to steal this guy away though

what good is greyshirting a guy like Bates going to do? We don't want him taking up a spot this year so we have him take a spot up next year when we have even more limited numbers and a loaded class?

Anyone else think we should have tried for the smaller class this year?

I just think we need to stop offering filler guys early. You offer them to fill out a class if you whiff on other guys that can actually contribute at your program. There's at least 3 players (and blackmon's not one of them) who have no chance at contributing anywhere other than special teams.

There are three guys who aren't qualified right now: Blue, Simon, and Mathieu. Porter is qualified. Blue has a 3.0 gpa and has never taken the ACT because he was supposed to be a junior this year. If he scores a 15 or higher, he will be qualified, so I am already counting him in.
It means nothing for 3 (really 2) guys to not be qualified right now. Every school other than Duke, Vandy, Rice, or Stanford is in a similar situation in the best case scenario.
In the last 5 years, there have been a whopping TWO commitments who didn't qualify academically by August, and one of those guys qualified 5 months later.

Yeah it really sucks we can only sign like 15-20 guys next year
84 scholarship players currently-17 seniors=67 scholarship players heading into 2010.
67+27 new signees=94 scholarship players
94-10 transfers/dismissals/early entry/etc=84 scholarship players for 2010
84 scholarship players-10 seniors (assuming Hicks transfers this year and goes somewhere else)=74
74-10 transfers/dismissals/early entry/etc=64 scholarship players for 2011 and 21 signees for 2011.
With an extra transfer or two, you get to 23.
