LSU needs to offer a 2026 placekicker.

Ideally they’d have picked up a 2025, but that ship has sailed. Since there will be no walk-ons next year the whole idea of a spring competition to win the job is kind of gone. You get a top 2026 and he gets the summer to get right.
Most schools, I think, will stagger two scholarship kickers so one is at least around a full season to see what’s going on. Looks like we have a KOS for a few more years following this one…just need a placekicker to take over for Ramos.
Hopefully after this season they’ll start pressing an accurate 2026.
Probably get a transfer for that season…still need a ‘26…even if the transfer has 2.

Recruiting high school kickers is dying. Coaches are looking transfer portal only basically

That’s just fricking dumb.
Great kickers who have been in college three years go pro, they don’t transfer.
You aren’t getting ~85% accuracy and 5 for 7 from 50+ out of the portal. You have to recruit those kids.

Be nice to also have a punter that could punt the ball more than 35 yards with the game on the line.

Punters are WAY harder to judge out of high school.
None of the competitions include a timing component. Catching and getting rid of the ball quickly adds so much variation to the drop…if you took the best high school punters and gave them 1.2-1.3 seconds to get rid of it most of them would spray TF out of it. You gotta learn that. High school snappers suck so much compared to an SEC caliber one you can’t even work on it until you get there.
Placekickers don’t have that gate. Worrying about a block just isn’t in their mind.

You’re correct in one aspect, the business that has become of high school kickers trying to go to college will suffer greatly. Last camp my son went to had 550 kickers. There simply won’t be as many because schools used to hold 4 or so walk ons, along with the scholarship kickers. Those are gone next year.
Instead of state schools being able to walk on kickers…now they’ll have to manage their two spots much differently. The coaches will have to get much better. Kickers do not have to go to the SEC to make it pro, the ACC probably has way more in the NFL.
If you’re successful and kicking well enough to go pro, transferring to Georgia to compete with the best kicker out of high school is the last thing you want to do. I guess we all have our opinions.

Your sports writing is exceptional.
My son is good friends with Peyton, he’s definitely been inspirational.
To the thread…a Peyton does not come in the portal. Ever, never. His accuracy and range would have beat out ANY kicker they put against him, and you’d be a fool to transfer in with that dude, unless you like the bench.
My son is so gripped to break our state record. First game he had it on his foot, and he yipped a bit.
Hasn’t stopped talking about how he should have made it. As a dad I’m like yea, don’t let it go by again.

Bama literally got the defending Lou Groza award winner in the portal

Yea, because they missed on a scholarship guy who was around during Richard’s last year. Why, because they sucked at picking kickers. Sounds familiar to LSU.
Now when everyone moves to scholarship only are you going to let everyone pick first then pick from the kids two years ago that didn’t get picked?

Burrell just beat out our scholarship kicker in Dibert to handle kickoffs

Dibert got hurt last year against A&M trying to make a tackle. Burrell was on scholarship whether he beat Dibert or not.
They were very similar talents out of high school. Burrell a touch more raw, both had 80 yard kickoffs in comps.

This is very true. Soccer player turned punter here and when my Sp teams coach would snap to me (former college snapper) it was a night and day difference on my consistency, distance, rhythm vs our crappy snapper.
He could put it right on my left hip every time on a rope, vs having to hope and pray it didn’t roll to me in the games w/ my actual snapper. *He did get better, mainly bc I would force him to come practice all summer w/ me, but the speed the bal lot back was quite the difference.
