I think we’re missing LSU’s approach to NIL. It seems we believe that if we invest more in our coaching staff we’ll have to spend less on NIL with our ability to develop talent out of the high school ranks while spending in the portal on proven commodities.

Will it work? Who knows, but it just seems to be our approach at this point.

I think the majority of us can agree that spending more money on proven college football players over unproven talent in the high school ranks is a good approach.

That doesn’t mean they won’t spend on some high school talent that they feel really good about (Pickett, Berry, Phillips, etc).

No lol. I doubt that's their approach but if it is, not a very smart one. LSU will keep getting outbid if that's the case. Players want their money now because they know this will not last forever. You can't blame them for doing this. So you either get on board with it temporary or stay left behind.

LSU might try to sell this to weather the storm but I don't think it's their ultimate strategy. I think they about to get dirty in the portal.

I would rather spend money to complete a roster and focus on proven players rather than high school players. High schoolers should be for development and depth. Underwood might be great but price is way too high for a high school player. Stewart has played one season and I would rather get two proven portal defensive lineman.

I agree to an extent but you still need elite talent from HS. You can't have one or the other. You need both if you're going to seriously look at championships. You must fill your ranks with HS for depth that are talented alongside stopgaps temporarily in the portal.

If you think HS players are asking for too much what do you think portal players who are proven are asking for? You either pay up or get left behind. It's that simple.

Love how everyone is will to pay a HS kid millions just to enjoy having a chance at a natty.

NIL was gone the day it was announced. These kids are nothing more than pay-for-play mercenaries. shite.... these kids make more now that anyone on this board.

They also have more unique talent than anyone on this board. I don’t think the current state of NIL is sustainable, but they are unique and they often put more effort into their craft than anyone on this board either. Certainly earlier in their lives than most do.

No it will not work. Do it fricking both. I would believe all these college coaches can’t handle players making more money than them. The ones that don’t will not be successful in college. Because the teams that are doing it, the coaches don’t give a shite. I can definitely see BK having a problem with this. Dabo is probably like this and when they get boat raced by South Carolina on Saturday, Clemson will be in a way worse spot than they anticipated.

Actually Kelly said we aren’t throwing money at portal guys and instead focusing on high school recruiting. He said this last year when several dline players choose other schools.

i agree with this. i was initially no supportive of the portal, and agreed with BK on his position on not building from the portal. and you can still have that mindset, building the talent depth via HS recruits, and then paying for those gamechangers in the portal.

Realistically, if LSU were looking to fill 40 roster spots, 25-28 should be HS studs and then load up on portal guys. not that this is the way numbers wise, but a balance of both seems to be the way moving forward.

Yes but they still don’t deserve the millions and millions they are getting thrown at them and haven’t proved a thing.

In theory we are going to use the same "cap" as everyone else. It'll be the off the books money that separates people or teams having more to spend year to year based on money coming off the books. The rich billionaire anomalies can't be avoided. We need to get us one.

Every year there will be a desperate Coach or Program that will throw money around for the PR to satisfy the fan base. FSU, A&M, Ole Miss and now Michigan. No one should try to match desperation. Have a plan and build quality depth and pay for the elite skilled players that will immediately make a difference.
