I'm curious given our insane depth at OF/C/DH:
If Frey/ Josh P/ Yamin IV get beat out for starting roles, is there chance Jay asks any of them to redshirt for an extra year of eligibility & development rather than being a bench bat when we are so deep? That doesn't seem to be his style typically
I'm definitely jumping the gun here, but if feels like those three are not likely for starting roles at the moment. Maximizing reps for Stanfield/ Brown/ Curiel/ Larson, the three catchers, Reaves, and talented freshmen who may emerge (like Costello) would be challenging enough even before mixing in those 3 bats. Plus maybe Pearson harnesses some super senior strength and go ham next year.

The spring addition was in reference to a different guy. But I’d be surprised if it happens anywhere though.
The late add guy I was referring to was Alberto Osuna from North Carolina. He was petitioning the NCAA for another year of D1 eligibility based on the Pavia stuff. A different SEC team was likely going to land him if it worked out, but it looked like we at least kicked the tires on him. As of right now, it appears he's staying at D2 Tampa and won't be returning to D1.
Tampa has loaded up on the extra JUCO year guys because in D2 they've kept that year. It's why Stephen Klein went there last year. They've been absolutely loaded the last few years because of it and they've got some dudes this year too.

Trenton Lape threw 3 innings for Chipola against Polk State this weekend.
3 IP
3 H
1 BB
4 K
0 ER
I don't know if he's in our future plans, but it looks like he's going to get innings this year at Chipola. Started their second game of the season.
Chipola and Northwest Florida State both have a few Louisiana guys, and D1 bouncebacks that I'll be keeping up with. Alex Walsh, who spent one fall at Mississippi State pitched for NWFS this weekend and had good stats.

Who was the JUCO player that we asked to stay one more year in JUCO? Tanner Reaves last year? or was it Lape this year? Or another player I'm forgetting?

Reaves last year, Daniel Harden this year.
Lape just transferred to Chipola at the break.

Yeah, TJ I believe.

Josh Pearson and Frey are not redshirting
Yamin is possibly one that could redshirt, he didn't have much of an impact during fall. Most that redshirt are likely gonna hit the portal unless they are working back from injury like Sheerin.

In addition to the JUCO LHP I mentioned previously here are a few other targets to keep an eye on:
Elijah Williams - 2026 LHP previously committed to Oklahoma, visited us this past weekend.
Bryce LeBlanc - Odessa College freshman LHP. 6'8" consistently in upper 90s. Also being recruited by Arkansas and A&M.
Nico Wagner - West Valley College Sophomore. 6'5" big bodied RHP. Was at Nevada last season.

Assuming these are all possible '26 additions?
Ah I see one is a '26 high school kid. I knew you mentioned the possibility of a late roster add but it fell through. Didn't know if any of these were in the same boat.

LSU E has finally moved up to the higher level juco division.
17. LSU Eunice (2024 Record: 56-8)
Year after year head coach Jeff Willis finds a way to win 50 plus games and this year shouldn’t be much different. The Bengals do however make the jump up a division to the D1 that could change the level of competition some come the postseason.

Interesting comments from Jay at Rotary meeting -
As part of the House settlement, baseball programs will be allowed to have up to 34 players on their rosters, all of whom would be paid through revenue sharing. Teams are allotted only 11.7 scholarships under the current system.
"I also have some directive from the school being like, 'We might not be going to 34 even if we're allowed 34,' " Johnson said.
LSU has 40 players entering this season, but only 12 who played in a game last year return to the team in 2025. A combination of departures through the transfer portal and MLB draft forced the Tigers to be aggressive in adding new players.
A federal court hearing that could approve the House proposal is set for April 7. Whether it gets ratified or not, Johnson said he's prepared for whatever the outcome may be.
"I have contingency plans for all of them," Johnson said.

Holy cow. I just saw on FB that Luis Hernandez is the #10 ranked catcher in the country according to d1 baseball. How is this possible? I thought the word was that he was raw? Doesn’t seem like much of a competition if he is that highly thought of.

A lot of it is bat related.
He's raw behind the plate in the sense that he's only played sparingly there for the last couple years.
I think his time playing for Puerto Rico over the summer advanced him quite a bit though.
The other thing to consider is that D1Baseball can't put out all these lists and then not have representation at each position from teams in their top 5 or fanbases that represent a good portion of their readership. I'm not saying that to discount Hernandez, as I think the rankings really are based mostly on his bat, but the effort to keep people reading is a non-zero part of the equation.

Hernandez looked like he can handle the position in the scrimmage against Samford
LSU is going to play multiple catchers and I can definitely see two getting plenty of time behind plate throughout season
Jay has played multiple catchers every season he's been here

They are much more motivated by getting early predictions correct.
My first thought was there is no way they’d put Hernandez on the list if they didn’t have high confidence he will be in the lineup most days. Hard to say whether or not they expect him to catch. They probably don’t have a top DH list.
Same thing with Curiel as freshman of the year. I’d be shocked if he isn’t out there opening day.

Been waiting for this to happen for a while. Really exciting for Eunice, they were ranked Top 10 by NJCAA (#9) 10 days ago in their Preseason poll.
Eunice potentially playing against teams like Blinn, McLennan, Central Arizona etc...is pretty exciting and a nice step up for the postseason.

Perfect Game is streaming some JUCO games this weekend if anyone is looking for something to watch. Right now it's Wabash Valley vs Gulf Coast State.

This looks like it’s back on the table. Tennessee will be getting him.

Unreal. Tennessee adds a power bat to put up 35 home runs in the high school stadium a week before the season. Can't wait.
Can't understate how stupid that JUCO ruling is. The retroactive application of these rules are so stupid. When a law is changed by the legislature (Louisiana state laws), if the application is not specifically designated as retroactive or prospective, the court looks to the intent of the law/change of the law. There is a whole thing going on right now in La regarding the direct action statute (naming insurers and pleading allegations against them directly in a lawsuit, won't go into too much detail). I have a hearing next week on it
I don't know the SCOTUS rule on this, and don't feel like looking it up, but I'd imagine it's something similar. The intent of these rule changes were not to give JUCO/lower division players a blank slate of eligibility. They were to allow players to, from that point forward, profit off of their name, image, and likeness.
If you want to play the "players can get paid now and should have then" game, LSU players were literally suspended after the rule change for accepting payments before the rule change.
