I'm well aware of that. That is why the discussion is on the interest on who, if anyone, from this class will do it. You have a few recruits who can do both at a high level.

Portal arm to watch: LHP Carlos Rey from Nova Southeastern (D2 in Florida). Baseball Reference career stats
ETA: Rey is draft eligible and is ranked 346 on the BA 400. Should he commit to LSU, he will still be a draft sweat.
Here are a couple of reports from Baseball America on him:

Here are a couple of reports from Baseball America on him:
quote:
The loose, long-armed lefty has the sort of life on his 92 mph fastball that will bring scouts to Davie, Fla. Rey is an effectively wild pitcher, and a low, three-quarter slot and the fact that he throws across his body can create an uncomfortable at-bat for hitters. Attacking with a two-pitch mix, Rey's slider is a firm, 85-88 mph sweeper, but it lacks consistency. When the junior lefty is on, he can be very difficult to handle but there is room for improvement with his control. Rey gives off reliever vibes for the next level with a chance for the velocity to tick up even more thanks to his room to add size and strength to his wiry-athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame.
quote:
March Report: Rey is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound lefthander with swing-and-miss stuff, but he’s also consistently struggled to harness it throughout his career. His walk rate is over 15% at Nova Southeastern, though he has outperformed that, via a 2.62 ERA, early in the 2023 season thanks to racking up 50 strikeouts and avoiding hits in his first seven starts. Rey throws a fastball in the 90-94 mph range, a mid-80s slider and a mid-80s changeup. He missed plenty of bats in the Cape Cod League in 2022 as well, though his 25 strikeouts in 21 innings also came with 18 walks.

Does he throw strikes?
You can click on the stats link I posted if you really want an answer.
If you're asking that question as a way to shite on the current roster, please take it to a different thread.

The stats say no… get off your high horse. It was a simple question and you didn’t have to be an arse about it

Those reports sounds like he can be a bullpen piece. Get him on those sleds and get some weight on him and he can be mid to upper 90s from the left side. Work on getting that under control a little more and he can be a great addition.

are we getting a crowd sourced preview this week?

I'm working on it right now. I don't know a ton about UGA and am not feeling particularly hateful this week.

Good stuff. You wouldn't happen to know what position he is playing? Blinn doesn't seem to like to put that on the lineup box scores.

I finally saw a highlight of him playing in the field. It's from today's playoff game. Looks like he's playing second.

More coaching turnover, the coach at Miami OH was fired last night. They have a pitcher with a COVID year that's interesting, but nothing else really.
The coaching turnover this year won't be as severe as last year. And outside of the Alabama opening, there really isn't anything open now where portal shopping gets fun.
The Bama job might be a good domino though depending on who they hire. If they hire the guy from Campbell, the feeding frenzy on that roster will be absurd.

Is Blinn’s ballpark tiny? 13 of his 15 hrs are at home it looks like

I haven't been able to find dimensions. It's called Leroy Dreyer Field if anyone wants to dig in on it.
ETA: Nevermind, found it and yeah it's tiny.

The dimensions of the natural turf field are: 325 foul lines, 355 power alleys and 375 straightaway center. Athletic field expert Floyd Perry rated the playing surface, in the summer of 2000, among the top 1 percent in all of college baseball.

Curious to see what happens with the Southern Miss job also with Berry retiring. Wonder if the plan is for the pitching coach to take over or they look outside.

I think it's Ostrander. That's why I don't think that job creates much of a ripple effect.
