I’ve only seen us attached to one HS position player so far and it’s a kid from Texas, so I’m not sure. Infielder Ryan Black, currently committed to UTA but they had a coaching change.

I think he likes O'Brien. Also wonder about other LA kids that haven't signed, moved, committed to stay local at a Delgado or Nunez or BRCC or even Eunice anyway, etc. Maybe get a waiver, some pooled NIL money, a scrape of scholly money. Really just depth guys that can get the experience, maybe pop, maybe not, no harm, no foul they can go back to their original plans if it doesn't work out past this year.

Agreed. I think, with no moves, we're pretty set in alot of places for 2024 and beyond as long as he keeps working the 2023 class (and he will). He still could have some depth issues in 2023 if he stands still, and I don't think he wants to have that. Really just brainstorming some options to be safer than sorry for next year. Next year is big for the program.

I’m thinking full court press for skenes and then fill that last covid sr spot with an IF if possible. Maybe finding an under the radar HS IF if they have some available worth taking. I think the OF is fine where it’s at for sure. So is the C position for now and pitchers other than Skenes.

I have alot to type but Skenes or no Skenes is key. I'll just say I think Skenes or no Skenes makes a big difference for Travinski, Cranford, Merrifield, and how you treat those Covid senior spots. He's a big deal for this roster structure.

So are you thinking Cranford is an option to come back from the transfer portal?
Merrifield is likely safe being only have 4 covid sr spots are taken.

I'd think Cranford would have to be an option to return, especially if Young signs. Our infield depth would be horrendous.

And, I'm not sure how safe Merrifield would be. I like him. I want to see him as a 2B option. But, if Young is in and Skenes signs, I think you have to look at trimming Merrifield and/or Travinski...or just let Cranford go.

None of the other guys you named is a covid sr though. They can’t count as your 5 extra over the 35 man. That’s why I say Merrifield should be safe. It’s only Dugas, Beloso, Merrifield, and Bollman that have 4 of 5 covid spots that don’t have to do with the 35 man.

I can’t see Cranford coming back in any scenario
Posted on 7/20/22 at 9:40 pm to BayTiger13
Correct. But, your redshirts don't count either. If it's 1 or 2 of 3 for Merrifield, Travinski, and Cranford...you can't just look at who is a free spot over 35. Cranford, as mediocre or worse as he's been, might be a safer bet for the roster structure as far as need. Might need both. Travinski may be needed for insurance at catcher without Skenes.
I'd just suggest not looking at those 5 covid senior spots as having to be filled at all, or even by guys you know.

Even if Young signs? If Young signs, I hope he comes back for insurance.

So let me see if I am reading this right Rocky
With the roster already bloated +9 or 10, whatever it is
You think lsu should
-trim it down & take on guys to redshirt
- keep Cranford for insurance
-keep 8 catchers just in case

I don't know yet.
ETA: You down to start an infield of White, Thompson, and Guidry with backups of Merrifield, Dugas, and Pearson? Neal and Milazzo at catcher with Travinski, Frey, and Jones as backups?

No I don’t see him coming back to be an insurance policy. Why would he?

Sorry but whatever you are saying is just completely going over my head or makes no sense. All the guys that aren’t covid sr make up the 35. That is the roster structure. The 4 covid sr are extra for next season and has nothing to do with your 35 man. Why wouldn’t you fill all 5 spots? Doesn’t matter to future roster numbers because they will be gone after next season.

It’s not ideal but how does Cranford help that? He’s not good at all
Catcher is fine without Travinski (not saying he is leaving. But he’s firmly C #3.)
Infield is fine without Cranford. Simon & Guidry van both play SS and there are multiple options at 2B/3B when you write it out
All that said, Young has a ton of leverage to return to lsu. I can’t see him leaving. He has some money to make between NIL & his next signing bonus

I know, it sometimes takes a couple of days before you guys repeat what I say.
You should fill all 5 spots if you can. But, you don't have to. If your roster works better with a true 35+5, fine. If you're 35+competition, better. You don't hang onto a Merrifield over Cranford just because Merrifield is a +5. And, I'm just using that as an example. If you need help at a position group, you lock in the guy(s) that helps most...worry about the free spot (and roster size) next. You get your 35-40+ then worry about the free spots. I hope we're not reserving for +5 guys.

If Young comes here, totally different.

Skenes is irrelevant. He is lagniappe.
Young is important because you already have built a roster with him as a piece.
