Let's use Jordan Burch in portal as a case study.

Why would he go in portal.

1 year left before NFL.
2. Wanted to go to South Carolina because it was close to home. Had to be, South Carolina was no good when he chose them. He could have gone anywhere he wanted out of HS.
3. Why Oregon, and why Oregon right out the box as he enters portal. Because some of these big money Boosters are working with staff on team and finding out who to look at. This is tampering and this is a real problem with Portal.

LSU does it too. Wingo was a big time player in SEC as a freshman but they still got him to transfer to a then dumpster fire LSU program under O being rebuilt by BK. You don't something was fishy there even with a great coach like BK? Look at how many transfers he got as soon as he took the job. Those were in the works already.

But yes, it's a problem everywhere. Ricks was obviously tampered on our roster when Bama got him and they tried to get Boutte.

TCU is in the championship because of the portal. This is how NCAA is and universities like TCU are loving it because you can get 1 year power shifts like that from the portal.

I'm not saying LSU doesn't do something like this. But LSU as a brand is much different from Oregon. LSU wins natties and LSU puts loads of talent in the NFL. Purple and gold gets a longer look from scouts than green and yellow.

Point went over your head...LSU tampers just like anyone else. We might actually be tampering more than the average university because we're signing top 10 HS classes and top 10 portal classes. You think they didn't tamper to get all those players to transfer over to LSU in 1 week just recently? LSU took 2 DL starters away. Good ones at that.

Sure, they can go to LSU to get more exposure and that's part of it alongside maybe better development but nonetheless there's still plenty of tampering involved there. Do you think they just decided to randomly contact LSU and say damn I want to play under BK this is where I always wanted to be? No, you flip around LSU backchannels them and tells them they like their potential if you come over here we can offer more than West Virginia or Arizona can. You're wasted talent on their rosters and can compete for something more.

It's part of the game now ValleyMan. We just have to be better at it than anybody else. Them horses ain't coming back to the barn by their own selfs...
I actually thought there were going to be way more guys who announced entry then signed with a new team same/next day specifically because the deals had already been done but I underestimated the competition of the behind the scenes negotiations.
As far as Oregon goes, that's another surprise for me. I thought the Nike $ would be flung far and wide enough that no way Cristobal would leave (yes, Miami is his dream job) and they would easily be buying to 3 classes immediately. Anyway, it hasn't worked out that way so far.

Wingo's High School coach came to LSU, Robert Steeples has a huge reputation in the area... not the same

Why do you think they hired Steeples?

Do you actually think Wingo contacted LSU or the other way around? Don't be naive. Steeples has a ton of connections in the area and they've used it to their advantage in the portal/recruiting.

One of my absolute favorite things about this board: There is no possible way any player could ever choose any school over LSU for any reason other than it being closer to home or NIL. It's simply beyond the pale to suggest that a single player anywhere would ever prefer a single aspect of any other school over LSU. As a corollary: Every single recruit we ever lose is because of NIL.

Never change.

No they didn't but it definitely was part of his hiring process. Obviously they wanted a good coach but his connections certainly helped.

Kids sue the NCAA and win. NCAA got tired of fighting court battles over transfers and said frick it have a free for all. Its not going back unless laws are passed by congress which ain't happening either.

That’s part of being a coach/recruiter in college football.

Not just because of the portal though.
